Talow

Anyone use mutton talow for patch lube. I did years ago but just getting back into this and was thinking I might try it again. If you dud how was it for you.

not straight.

Shoot wet = Shoot all day.....cutting oil/water.

I used 50% lamb tallow & 50% beeswax in my first batch of lube; it was ok, but still pretty crunchy. I wound up adding quite a bit of olive oil to get it to sort of a "cool margarine" texture at room temperature.

The tallow itself is pretty soft on a non-winter day. I think it would be too soft to carry around in any container that isn't completely waterproof (except in February!).

If I ever run out of batch #1 (it turned out to be a lot), I think I'll use about 25% beeswax to firm up the tallow, and add wax if needed to get a consistency I like.

I use deer tallow. I always mix in a little olive oil right before I take it off the heat. Not mutton but I imagine quite similar. Deer tallow/olive oil is my favorite lube. I can load tight combos easily with this lube.

Have been using mutton tallow exclusively for the past couple of years. Its great greasy stuff. Works great. The viscosity of mutton tallow available on-line varies considerably.

This one is quite stiff. Tends to stay on the patch surface



This one is medium, about like vaseline. will permeat though the patch



This one is very soft, like warm shortening.

I too use deer tallow , but mutton tallow should be pretty similar, just a bit softer on average.

the British used mutton tallow for 200 yrs and would have used something else if it was better here are 3 different barrels makers , Green mtn, getz ,2 Bobby Hoyt
use a double boiler dip patching squeeze out extra then wrap tight, should feel waxy (less need to wipe between shots ) but when mixed with wax(bees or other) had a hard ring form just above the ball seating (swiss powder) but not with straight mutton
