Taking a break. Mainly organized parts and pieces today. Resharpened some chisels. Did a little inletting around the breech, but mostly marking high spots. I disassembled the lock and addressed the mainspring. I was able to file off the trash, then got it sanded and polished. Still a shame the spring needed that much attention.

The early English guns only used the flat sheet brass serpents. There are good photos of these in For Trade & Treaty. No doubt Comfortably Numb can do the engraving better than me, but I’d like to try it. Can always get another to send him.

With all do respect,,, and admiration for your determination to try it yourself,,,, given such a generous offer from @Comfortably_Numb why not have him do the one you have and give it a try on the replacement one you order? If yours comes out to your standard you will still always have the one he did as a keepsake/trophy with a cool story behind it.

Not getting fretful over anything. And I’m very much used to tuning my locks. The mainspring has a rather high level of importance in the performance of a lock and I was able to correct the poor finish. Not sure what your statement has to do with that quote. Anyway thanks for your interest.

Just about finished inletting the barrel. Still have a high spot I’m chasing where the barrel makes the transition to round. Working slow, just using small files, small chisels, and sandpaper wrapped around a 1/2” dowel. Knocking off for the day now.
