Hey all! I know that variety is the spice of life but sometimes you wanna keep stuff similar for the sake of purchasing supplies. Anyway, I have a Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle which I absolutely adore and it fits the #6 English flints very well. I liked the quality of the lock so much that I bought the round face lock for a smoothbore I'm having a good friend build me. My question is for those who have experience with both locks. Can I get away with using the #6 flints in the round face lock and just add some thicker leather to make up the size difference? The recommended sizes are the same in one dimension for both locks but I don't know if flints are sized length x width or vice versa. If it's length x width I think I can make it work but if it's width x length, I think I might have some issues. Any input would be great.

Flints are width x length to the best of my knowledge. That said, I made a 3/4" flint fit a Pedersoli lock, that calls for a 7/8 flint, by doubling up on the leather.
That is good to hear! If I can make one size fit all my flintlocks, I'll be a happy guy.

Of course, @James Kibler would know and be able to make a recommendation with regards to flint size.

Yes, @Thomas.bill92 can add a length of leather thong the width of the frizzen behind the flint to move the leading edge closer to the face of the frizzen or under the back edge of the flint to change the scraping angle of the flint along the frizzen face.

I make a leather wrap that has a notch cut at the fold to fit around the jaw clamp screw. That way I can have a flint that is the width of the frizzen and the length can vary from the front of the jaw clamp screw to 1/16" sort of the face of the frizzen. That amount of adjustment will allow you to find one flint size for both of your locks.

I've actually used larger and smaller flints than what is recommended. But it's always much easier using the correct flint for the job.

Making my own.
I tried my hand at knapping, all I got were turtles.. if you knap, you'll know what ybat is. So I thought, mumm, I have a 7 inch tile saw for cutting g slabs to pressure flake. I I cut some up using a flint I bought.
Mine are 1 x 7/8.
I used some flint I found, well commandeered from the Costco parking lot, landscape gravel( bull gravel).
It sparks like crazy, when i hit it with my steek striker.

where in north Texas, where today its 97, feels like 113°

I don't like the high spot on the store bought ones. So I thinned mine some.

to hot to go to the outdoor range to test them.
And NO GO at the indoor one.
no black powder on any kind.

Any comments , suggestions?

I have a Queen Anne lock on my smoothbore and I use the same no.6 flints in it, as my rifles with their Siler style locks.

Here are the ones I made
These are the first ones I ever tried..not to consistent at the beginning
