I just picked up an old rusty percussion barrel, and I'm looking for some ID/age help. There are some markings, but nothing that helps me. There's a 4 over 20 and what looks like "MT" and a symbol (maybe bird?) on the underside. There's what I originally thought was a "P", but might be a horn (military?), and a few other marks. See pics. Any ideas where it came from or it's age? IMG_3645.JPGIMG_3635.JPGIMG_3637.JPGIMG_3638.JPGIMG_3639.JPGIMG_3640.JPGIMG_3644.JPG

Great find.

Have you held her gently by the breech and thumped her muzzle? Does she ring like a bell?

How wide is the breech?

Smoothbore?

If you rub some chalk into the letters they will stand out a lot better . Does the barrel have flats on the top and round underneath all the way ? or does it change to a round barrel with rings ? I have read where some makers put hex marks on the barrel and under the sights to help with accuracy

Nice ring. About 55 caliber. It appears to be very slow rifling.

It is rounded on the bottom the whole length. The top is half an octagon to just in front of the rear sight, then round the rest of the way.
