Thank you all for your views. I wanted to know how others have dealt with similar problems I'll try physical therapy. I take large doses of turmeric ginger and pepper for inflammation. It works better than the pills prescribed by the doctor. However it doesn't seem to help the shoulder

I had the right shoulder rotator cuff surgically repaired in 2017. Full thickness tear ,SLAP repair..
It took over a year for it too heal, but I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during that time… That and shooting 4 or 5 .648 roundballs out of my smoothbore 4 weeks after the surgery could have complicated my recover…
It still bothers me if I sleep on my right side too long…

Then I dislocated my left shoulder and tore the rotator cuff where it attaches too my back… in 2018.
Specialist in Nashville says, 30-40 % tear, gotta do surgery..
I said no thanks!

It took about 6 months but it did heal itself…

However it’s just like the other one if I sleep on it too long , it’ll let me know..

Good Luck with yours!👍

Both of my shoulders are titanium, and it sure solved the problem of pain. I'm only allowed to lift 30 pounds each side, and I know at times I must hit 35 to 40 but they haven't giving any trouble. It's reverse ball operation and I have real good movement. I did buy a lighter percussion without 24 inch barrel, one and 48 to use for offhand shooting, but being in my 80s, I wasn't real good Offhand before. I couldn't raise either arm above my head before the operations. One was four years ago and the other two years ago. I was a little scared of recoil, but I don't load superheavy and it hasn't been a problem.

Not to be an alarmist and I'm certainly not a doctor. I'm surprised that the cardiologist here didn't mention this . Whatever the case may be, I had been having Right Side shoulder pain off & on for years and it had been diagnosed as "bursitis".

One night it got so bad that my wife ran me down to the E.R. They did an EKG even and didn't find anything. Gave me a shot of something for pain and sent me out the door.

It really began to hurt as I was trying to leave so the Doc had them hook me up to the EKG again. This time the Doc said, " You're having a heart attack!" Then , next thing I knew, they were shaving me, pushing me down the hallway and then I was waking up with a big white light beaming down on me with a guy telling me that they had put 2-stents in and that I was going to be OK.

So, even though my pain was in my right shoulder, the cardio-guy said that sometimes your brain plays tricks on you and just manifests one of the worst pains you have experienced.

So, go get checked out, a stress test might turn up something that won't show on a normal EKG.?

Like I said, I'm no Doctor of anything and don't even have a bachelor's degree in Percussionologigal Studies. Just something to have checked out. Hope it will soon pass and that you can get back to shootin' !

Over the last 20 years , I know If I'm allowed to stay on Planet , I have to deal with two entities , those being brain , and the other , body. Older I get , the more I notice body gets pi$$ed w/ brain. Pain creeps into old wounds that can't be fixed , so it's , brain must cope with body , or nothing. Now a days ,brain has to tell body to shut up , go sit in the corner , I got stuff ta do.
I have an 84 yr. old friend , retired cattle farmer , has ground 20,000+ , board ft. of prime stock wood into precarved m/l stocks , since 1972. A guy asked him , why do you still go into your shop every day? Fred says ," Because I can still do it."
As time takes it's toll , ya have to decide who will outlast the other , brain, or crippled body. Getting old , is not for sissies. I was blessed to watch my dear old 90 + yr. old Dad's body wear out , and if I'm fortunate , maybe I'll get to live long ,too. I am still able to build a credible m/l gun from scratch , and can still help folks that need it, long as my other Father lets me stay..............oldwood

Somehow I've injured the muscles in my left shoulder, the rotator cuff. The doctor says it isn't bad enough for surgery to make it right,

Last night I tried to take an offhand shooting position with a rifle I'm putting together. It has a one-inch 54 cal barrel 36 inches long. It's heavy. Lifting it made my shoulder hurt like heck. Now I'm wondering what I can do for the shoulder. Any advice?
Another Kansan here. Sorry for your shoulder pain and inability to fully use, believe me it can be a crappy part of aging, I well know, 75 yrs.. Mine has to large extent self-resolved, not completely and don’t think it ever will completely but I can now at least use it without much discomfort. The way to start it healing is to discontinue doing things that hurt. Overly simplistic I know, sorry. The problem is the pain is probably tendon and ligament in nature and those things are not well profused with blood and take a long time to heal, and are easily to reinjure. As mentioned PT can also help but remember healing can be slow. Use the internet for exercises you can do, but don’t over do it go slow.
Now this is of no help at all but for your next barrel go smaller, I love a 13/16” across the flats, slim and trim. Even 7/8” helps a bunch. Of course Shorter length helps a lot obviously because of less overall weight but the big thing is the weight is not out so far on the end of the barrel, a shorter lever so to speak. Good luck, 🍀

I don’t remember a specific injury but my shoulder hurt when I raised my arm over my head. Went to a sports surgeon. X-ray showed a bone spur cutting into my rotator. Surgery removed the spur. 6 months of PT. Pain gone. Full rotation back.

My doc told me to try and lift my arm straight to the side, that was a sure way to tell if it was a rotator. He set me up with a sling to take the weight off when I wasn't using it. That was 10yr ago and it bothers me a little if working really hard but it seemed to heal on its own. The only stuff I used was Blue Emu and a sling that helped a lot. A friend invented Blue Emu and it really worked on me.

Does your .45 have a traditional crescent butt plate or a recoil pad?
Its a Virginia rifle, flat steel butt plate, no pad.
There is a picture of it somewhere on this website.
Cant find it right now have to punch in to work.

On all 3 45/70s I have Limb Saver recoil pads. Best you can buy.
My buddy uses thier slip on for his win mag. Then takes it off.

Wow! I was not aware of that! Thanks.
It can eventually degrade and move back to the point where it is impossible to repair. At that point you will need a shoulder replacement. If you have a primary care provider he should know who the best orthopedists for shoulder work are. If not, research carefully before committing to one.

You need to see a physical therapist.

And,,,

I know many who haven't tried it will defecate on the suggestion,,,, screw them......
Try acupuncture. It saved my wrists and hands after a few accidents and other traumatic events left me with tendon and ligament issues... which saved my archery and pistol shooting.

Also, increase the amount of Omega-6 fatty acids I'm your diet, these are natural anti-inflammatory agents. Decrease their opposing agent, Omega-6 fatty acids. More; sardines, mackerel, salmon, grass fed/grass finished beef,,,, NOT flax seed or flax seed oil. Less; grains and legumes.
To note, I am not a physician,,,, my medical background is in cardiology and cardiac technology. But, after some very serious health issues, some life threatening, I did some heavy research into diet and how food and the chemicals and compounds in food effects us and our health. Thing is,,, a better diet can't hurt, even if it doesn't "fix" the problem being focused on at the time.
Even with a good healthy diet, p.t. will be needed.

^^^^^THIS! As a retired RN and lifelong Type 1 diabetic, I can't tell you how important the right diet is to your long-term health. PT can help with the shoulder issue, try it. Accu-Puncture? YES! I saw firsthand what accu-puncture did for my father who struggled for years with severe hip pain before the development of modern hip replacement surgery. But, if all else fails, be a strong advocate for yourself - Demand that the surgery be made available! Your shoulder isn't bad enough?? Says WHO?? It's YOUR life, You are unable to do the things that are important to YOU! Don't listen to the No-Nannies, find a different surgeon, explain your problem, INSIST they approve the surgery! I'm so fed up with the stinkin' insurance companies practicing medicine without a license I could just scream!!!

kansas_volunteer, be a strong advocate for yourself, check out PT, try accu-puncture, but if you're not getting the relief that you seek, find a surgeon who will work with you. Best of luck to you!

At different times in the last ten years or so I injured both shoulders. Saw the doctor both times and he recommended physical therapy. It worked. No surgery needed. Both times I went a couple of months thinking it would get better. It didn’t but the pt fixed it.
