Dang! Really? I was going to try some of those in my TC's. TC Hawken and Renegades are 1:48, right?
Maybe ‘well’ was a misstatement. Most old American rifles were made around 1/48. Modren shooters have went slower. TC tried to do a compromise twist and settled on the 1/48 and that twist does ball very well ( ask Sam Hawken) and worked well for the maxie.
A 1/48 would work very well elk killing accuracy.
Bullets are for the 'modern' bastid' break-over so-called muzzle loaders! PATCHED ROUND BALLS in the .58 are all that's needed to kill the biggest elk that ever walked in the REAL MUZZZLE-LOADING RIFLES!!
My repro Richmond in .58 (0.577) is 1 in 72" twist. 65 gn ffG puts Minié in the black.

I know it's a long shot since it's been a couple years but do you still have the 58 caliber bullets?

I shoot bullets in 1:48 all the time. Your rifle may or may not do well with them but Minies aren’t some magical creation which requires certain rifling 1:72 or what have you..
And they do fine in faster twist too. I will be shooting some oversized .582 out of a 1:38 next week that I got from Ed at Maplewood Bullets.
Reading Ned Roberts' book he speaks of doing just that in some Jaeger guns with great accuracy.

You can't go too wrong with the gentleman mentioned on post #16.I know he does roundballs so he may do conicals as well. Can't hurt to ask.
I get my .58 Minies from Pat Kaboskey, AKA the Civil War Bullet Man. He sizes to to whatever you want, and lubes them if you desire. They shoot great in my original Civil War muskets. For hunting, I'm with some other fellas, a PRB is the way to go. Conicals are powerful on paper, and penetrate very well, but PRB 's just kill very effectively at the distances at which traditional muzzleloaders should be used.
Pat Kaboskey is a N-SSA competitor and he knows minies. He is the ONLY commercial source I trust for "store bought" minies.

I find my Pedersoli P1858 with 1:48 twist performs best with heavy "Minie" style bullets. I use the RCBS-500M. However, the British paper-patched version of the Minie (Pritchett/Boxer/Hay) works also.
I may have to try the heavy Minie
