This year I drew every tag I put in for Pronghorn, Sandhill Crane, and Elk. It was also my first time putting in for crane! Better lucky than good they say. I was also lucky enough to fill all three tags an two filled using a flintlock. No I didn't get the crane with a flintlock, maybe if I draw it again tho! This was also my first year ever hunting with a flintlock. I've always hunted using percussion in previous years but have been shooting flintlock in rendezvous competitions lately and really enjoy it so I figured hunting is the next step. My Elk tag was for cow/calf around Saratoga WY. I dont usually hunt that far from home but my brother and his wife run a goat dairy down there now and have some awesome neighbors who allow us to hunt elk on their property. I went out with my brother the first morning of my stay and got within 175 yards of a small group but just couldn't close the distance. With a new game plan for the next morning I was able to get within 50 yards of this two year old calf. I would of liked a little more meat in the freezer but not complaining because it sure is tasty! I used a 54 caliber Jaeger built by Ed Anspach out of Ada Ohio in the early 70s no. 69. My father has harvested deer, pronghorn, and moose with it but never an elk so I was happy I could get er done!

Glad for your success, in planning your second attempt, killing your quarry and using your Dad's rifle in the process. Would love to hear more about the load, the shot, tge elk's reaction and the pack out. WY is such an incredible state. You weren't far from the Medicine Bpw Mountains. Beautiful area.

Congratulations!! That's most excellent.

I think this is fantastic. Many here might say impossible. They would have just lobbed in rounds from 175 yards as apparently many believe getting within 50 yards of western game that isn't in rut is impossible.

Next you'll be taking them with a flintlock smoothbore! 😉

Will you be tanning the hide?

Great stuff. Keep it up.

I used 95 grains of FF. 530 ball with a .018 patch. Shot was a little high of where I aimed but was a double lung dropping her instantly. By the time I walked to her she was deceased. It was a short drag to where I could get the truck so I was very lucky in that aspect too! Got her gutted an hung in the barn before lunch.
