Hello all. I have been a member for a long time now, but have not been active. I think I am wanting to get a flintlock longrifle soon, but have zero experience with flintlocks. I don’t know anyone that has one, so I am turning here for any help anyone can offer. I would like to get some 1st hand experience with them before choosing one. I am in Milan TN, but I don‘t mind a little driving.

Thanks everyone!

Are you familiar with Dixie Gun Works. I believe they are in Union City Tennessee. You could at least go and look at what they have. Looks like you are just an hour drive away.

Just a suggestion.

Dixie doesn't have a range and rentals. You can look at a bunch of antiques, but not many new guns are on display. They are mostly mail order.

Yea I am. I have been several times. That’s where I buy powder from. Also bought my Traditions Crockett rifle from there.

Do you like their antique car museum?
Yea It’s pretty cool. I hav been in the museum in a while, but I probably will the next time I go. I am going to take my 4 y/o son with me too. I’m sure I will have to leave with a toy gun or 2 🤣

Go to any rendezvous or other black powder event. Somebody will let you shoot their flintlock. They'll also give you all kinds of advice.... which you should always take with a grain of salt.
I have reached out to a couple of groups tat are within a couple hours of me, just haven’t been back from them yet... If anyone knows any upcoming shoots or events, please l me know.

April 14-15th is the Tennessee River Rendezvous
215 Ashley Road Saltillo Tennessee 38370
There will be several reenacting/living history groups as well as some longhunter shooting clubs.

I have reached out to a couple of clubs but they are 2hrs plus away. I’m hoping Imay be able to come across someone closer to home.

Well, you might, but then again, you might not. If you are not in a big hurry (and nobody buying a gun should be), wait until warmer weather returns. Seems to be more muzzleloading events happening in Summer/Fall than in the dead of Winter.

I used to only like percussion rifles. I never had a chance to shoot a flintlock. I just took the gamble, and came out a winner. I think you will definitely enjoy the flintlock experience. Go ahead and take the plunge. If you don't like it, you can put it up for sale on this forum. I have seen rifles sold the same day posted! Go ahead. You only live once!!!

You are probably right. Patience is something I’m having to learn.. It doesn’t come naturally to me unfortunately. 🤣

That is usually how I do things. I end up figuring it out as I go.

If you were closer I'd definitely let you shoot my Fowler. I'll say this I was a long time caplock guy, 7 years in civil war reenacting. I was use to big heavy caplock no interest in the small flintlocks. I started looking around on a few forums and got the itch. I decided to build a kit and have fell in love with the old slim longrifles. There is a learning curve but once you figure it out you'll be hooked.

Where are you located?
