LH Caywood Fowler 12ga

I'm new here so I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post.

I have a 12 gauge Caywood fowler. Jug chocked. It has never been loaded or fired and is in perfect condition. I'm thinking about selling it but not sure of the value.

Any help appreciated!

I could never get left handed Caywood locks to work reliably. Contacted Caywood and Danny told me to go buy my locks somewhere else. So I do.
I wouldn't give you a nickel for a left handed Caywood gun.

Geeeeeeeeze!!!! Making my first long gun, the only left hand round faced lock I could find was a Caywood, that was about twenty-five years ago. After untold number of shots the nose broke on the sear this past September, I called them and they had a new one to me within a week, no charge.
Oh yeah, still sparks like an arc welder!

I don't understand why the right hand locks are fine, but the left hand locks don't work. From an engineering standpoint. That makes zero sense.

Nevertheless, anyone have an opinion on what this thing is worth?

I do believe he asked what a fair cost for it would be. I don't think your missing nickel will bug him too much. Hopefully somebody helpful comes along OP. Caywood does have his prices on his website so you could start there and then deduct some for it being used/any nicks. I am sure someone who knows more will chime in! I do not understand some people that have to be unhelpful/snide from the start. The OP is obviously new and he is asking a fair question

Thank for your reply Magungo. I never even fired it and it is in pristine condition, so I think I have an idea what it's worth… But that doesn't mean someone's going to pay that much! Lol

not sure if the lefty is going to be a plus or minus.

There are plenty of lefties around here. If you keep it in the classifieds a southpaw will certainly come along eventually. It may not sell as quickly, but that is the same with all lefty things lol (I am lefty). Every so often someone posts an ad looking for a lefty gun. Good luck!

Danny Caywood is a good man! I find it hard to believe his left hand locks were bad. In my long life I have found there is always more to a story than one side!. A ball park would be $1000- 2200.00 depending on wood and condition. If you lived here in Maine and wanted to sell it it would be less.

I have been using my Caywood Wilson's Chief's Trade Gun, that is a left-hand flintlock .62 fusil for around 30 years now. Never have had a problem with it. Sparks just fine. I highly recommend a Caywood.

Difficult to pin down a price for your fowler without knowing the specific model or the condition. I've seen a used Caywood English Game Gun, in good condition, selling for around $1500.

I've had two Caywoods ( by the way I am not a fan of Caywood's but they fired wonderfully) and sold them both on Track or the Wolf. I was able to drive there and it looks like you are in New York so it would be a cost to send it. Anyway, they priced them well and they sold quickly.

I built two custom fowling guns with Caywood lefties on them. Both customers were extreamly un happy. I did what I could to get them to work but failed. I also sent them out east to good lock guys and they couldn't get them to work either.
I was set up at masker's station and Caywood was set up there too. One of my customers had his lefty fowling gun with the Caywood lock in it there. So we both took it over to Caywood's tent and handed it to Danny. who worked the lock which threw one feeble spark with a fresh flint in it. He asked what more did we expect and I told him I expected the lock to work. He tossed the gun back and shouted, "If you don't like my locks get them from somebody else." And was then escorted out of his tent. Boy, was he pizzed. Poor control of his emotions. So, I took his advice and have never bought another Caywood lock. If for no other reason, the incredibly shocking business practice.
