Trying a long shot here. I recently was given some underhammer castings by a friend. My friend got them from Ron Long. My friend says he only saw one of these rifles that Long built and that was in the early 80s. I'm trying to find somebody who has one of these rifles to get an idea of the rest of the design, all I have are the rough castings.
Thanks.

Reciever, hammer, and trigger.

I poked around looking for Ron Long Under Hammer pictures. All that came up were some breech loading lever action pieces.

All under hammers look very sleek and slender.

Copying other pieces would result in a very nice looking rifle.

Yea in his later years he built a lot of hi walls and other black powder cartridge rifles. Earlier on he made locks and other parts for muzzleloaders. A heck of a craftsman and a nice guy, I was to his shop once.

Yes, Ron was a good guy and a great craftsman and competitor. I shot with him in the BPCR matches. If you decide to sell any of the castings I would be interested, or if you need help putting it together I could help.

I have five sets of castings. I haven't decided if I really need all of them yet or not. Going to be a lot of just making stuff work on these actions as I have no information on how they are supposed to look when done.

Here is one of the underhammers that I have parts for. I have some extra flat annealed Main springs that might work for yours. I could send you a couple if you’d like.

I appreciate the offer but I don't know if it would be workable on these yet. These are quite a bit different from the h&a type. I need to mock these up on a board or something and figure out the main spring geometry. I'm kinda assuming at this point that it's an external mainspring but not 100 percent sure yet.

Hello Wyoming Whitetail,

I just won an auction for Ron Long Underhammer target rifle and will be picking it up this weekend. I'm not sure what information you are looking for, but would you have any interest in trading a spare casting set for some photos with some dimensional information? This entire rifle was built and finished by Ron in the 80s.

Although on closer inspection, your action is different than what I have. Not sure if there would be any common parts or not.
