Current build ... 58" barreled NW Trade Gun . I call it " The Long Tall Texan ' as its headed to Texas after completion . European walnut plank of wood , parts were supplied by the customer , I usually make most of the parts . The side plate is a awesome old North Stat side plate , wish it were mine ! Today is get the buttstock in roughed in shape and then tang screw and trigger guard mount . Almost time to test fire it ?!

I have been enjoying your posts. Your work is beautiful.

What do use for the buttplate nails?
Hi bud .... Its a long story , wish my gat fingers worked better o. This tiny phone . I had problems at the beginning with square tapered nails backing out and punching quate holes in BP just ruins the piece , its bad and I like a " used " look so that's saying a bunch ,!/ I found these nails at the hardware . They are ribbed on the shank ( no jokes now ! , LOL) and a big nail head . I cut them in half and grind each square . The ribs help make them hold fast and I can drill the plate instead of sqr. punch . Never had one back out , knock on wood

What's your source for European walnut? I've been looking off and on and don't seem to find anything long enough. But I know they're out there.

You just go to Home Depot and look for Butt Plate Nails in the fastener section!(Joke):)

More work on the Long Tall Texan .... Be taking her down to final shape the next two days ....

Would the square head nails originally used on these guns have been horse shoe nails or boot sole nails ? easily found and cheap in bulk, or would the gun makers have made their own ?

Sorry bud I really don't know . Guessing .... I guess that it was just a common type of nail at the time , I dont think there were round shank nails then . Horse shoe nails are too big so I imagine it was just a small sized easily obtainable nail ... Boot sole nail sounds plausible !

Got the side plate inlet and few small things done ....time for final shaping now . Refine it all to finish size and shape and slim it down to boot. Its 6.40 pds. now , let's see what it is when its done . I hope around or just under 6 , we'll see .
