Yesterday actually the 50 yard zero check on my1862 Sharps Sporting rifle was done. The original sights were removed and a Marble "Bulls Eye" peep rear sight was installed. On the muzzle end a nice Lyman ivory 1/16" bead sight was installed. The original sights may have been "PC" but were useless for these old eyes.
After three shots on the black center of the 50 yard target no hits were seen. The spotting scope showed that the lead splash in the black is hard to see at 50 yards. About an inch left of dead center, but I will take it.
Hahn tube with a 2.8c/c Lee dipper of FFFg, a thin paper wad, and filler to the base of a Moose Mould .54 caliber ring tail bullet secured in the tube with finger nail polish.
So a dozen are loaded and on the bench ready when it warms up a bit.
Held center
actually HIT CENTER!
I am happy

Continuing work on the SMR. I repolished the trigger guard, butt plate, pipes, & rear sight. Applied multiple coats of Jax Black and drew each back with steel wool. Trying to capture the same finish as the lock. I think I’m happy with it. Here’s a few photos in different lighting. Was shooting for a light, steel blue.
That’s really nice.

After reading so many posts about ramrods that came apart, I spent the last couple evenings inspecting, drilling and pinning rifle and shotgun ramrods. Now - like all of us I'm sure to meet some muzzleloading gremlins, but they shouldn't involve an unpinned ramrod!

Sanded the stock again after whiskering the SMR and cut in my one and only embellishment. Which after studying it, I’m going to try and clean it up a little more. Wiped down the stock with a damp rag for a 2nd whiskering. And I’ll sand down some of my test blocks to start experimenting with finishes.

What method for cutting in?

What method for cutting in?
I started by (trying) to pencil mark each end an equal amount from top to bottom and connected those with a straight edge. Then I took a square file and put an edge on the line and started cutting the line. Of course I jumped the line a couple of time and had to sand out my mistakes!!! After the basic lines were cut I switched to a round needle file. I found it very tedious!

Forgive me Father for I have......

Deer Creek has the Traditions .50 KY kits for $310.00 and I finally got one when stock available got to TWO (2). Better hurry. I'm gonna build it as practise to stain my Kibler. No confidence sucks.

Ordered a front n rear site for a CVA Hawkin flinter too. Came used from this very forum with some loose old fiber optic things that seem to have been misplaced.

Sorry Honey, yes I will sell a few...

@Century too late, I went back over it with the round file and folded sandpaper. I’m going to call this finished now before I bugger it up!
Very nice. Woodworking is my first love next to my wife. I have a dedicated wood shop so gun stocks are easy. Methods are the fun part of projects. Thanks for helping.

Took my T/C Renegade .50 flintlock out with a PRB to shoot a plastic bottle. Got it on the first hit, but the bottle shattered in the cold. Only managed to retrieve the top.
You must spend a bit of time cleaning up that yard, Mr Raby! You sure have a lot of fun spreading those jugs around. Keep it up for as long as you can!

Well, lots of patches in the driveway, but the snow covers the pieces of targets until spring. That's when I do most of the cleaning up. I'm fortunate in that I can sit on the back porch and shoot without the neighbors calling the police.
