I made myself a barrel channel plane and I thought some of you might want to know how to make your own. I started with a cheap amazon rabbit plane. the first step is to disassemble and to make the body of the plane the width you want. I would go just smaller than the width of your barrel or the narrowest part of a swamped barrel. then you layout on either end of the plane a radius. you can use a compass or a round object that is the correct size. Then simply remove wood till the sole of the plane is of a half round profile. Cover the iron with sharpie or layout blue and reassemble. Using a scribe trace around the iron so that it matches the plane body. Then shape the iron to match. A bench grinder and some water to keep the iron cool would be very helpful but I managed to do it with a saw and file. the more closely the iron matches the plane body the better. once the shape matches grind a 22 degree bevel on the iron and sharpen. At this point it is best to test out on some scrap. you are looking for it to take a fine shaving. to adjust the iron deeper strike the iron with a small hammer, to retract hit the back of the plane. make sure to tap the wedge after adjusting. It may be helpful to shorten the plane a little to work closer to the breech end of the channel.

Very cool !! Great job ! Always wanted to do something like this !

Be sure to use a cheap common plane for this. If you have an old plane you want to use, check to make sure it is not a collectible…….some are worth big bucks!
