Royal Navy Sea Service Pistol

I am interested in buying a Royal Navy Sea Service flintlock pistol with the 9" barrel. I was looking at Access Heritage, however research on the forum suggests that that company may not be the company to go through due to quality and shipping information. Does anybody here know where else I might be able to locate or track down a pistol such as that with better quality and/or shipping and service? Thank you in advance! Pistol in question here

Where did you find a gunsmith to drill the vent hole? I am having trouble finding somebody that is able or willing to do that.

Hello - I just received my Royal Navy Sea Service pistol, long version, from Access Heritage Inc. (militaryheritage.com). It's beautiful!

I live in Western Washington, where there is no shortage of gunsmiths, and I hope to hear back from one of them this week about drilling the vent hole.

However, I've never owned or used a flintlock before. So my question is, "are there any websites, forums, groups I can contact to learn how to use and care for it?" For example, I'm wondering what size flints to get, and also what size balls and which patches to use, how to clean it, ... and a whole bunch of other questions.

Can anyone recommend any web sites I can access / groups I can join to help bring me up to speed on all of these things?

Hi, PirateFan777 - I'm totally new to black powder flintlock firearms, so take that into account when reading this.

I just bought and received the long version of the Sea Service pistol shown on the web page you referenced - it arrived 3 days ago, 11-24-23. I was delighted with militaryheritage's service. In the online order I submitted about 2 weeks prior, I put something in the comments box saying "I just want to make sure that this will be an actual working pistol once I have the vent hole drilled" (as opposed to a non-firing replica). About an hour after I submitted the order, I got a phone call from one of the people there to answer my question. I also asked him a number of other questions, and he was very helpful. I could go on about further contacts I've had with them, but I am convinced they provide excellent service.

As for the pistol itself, it is a beautiful piece of work. One of the customer reviews was from a guy who said he has an actual antique version of that pistol, and that other than some detail, it was identical. I understand these are made in India, and I've seen some criticism of flintlocks made in India, but I've also seen a lot of believable comments saying they're fine, although they may need some tuning. I haven't yet tested the sparking (tuning of the lock), and I can say the trigger pull force seems excessive. However, I believe these are easily addressed.

Anyway, for the price, and the availability, and given the way it feels to me, and the excellent service I've received so far, I am very happy with my purchase. Of course, it's still early days.

If you use Facebook there is a very good group called “Holster and Pommel
Pistols” (or something like that). Good place to get some of your questions answered as well.

Look up on the web Cascade Mountain Men. They are up your way. They are a black powder shooting club that's been around for over fifty years.
They also have a Black powder gun show in March. You can find a lot of instructions on YouTube. You just have to look around.

Not mentioned is pyracy.com it used to be very busy but has been down for a number of years. It's back up along with all the old data so tons of information.

That it the real difference between veteran/loyalist and heritage. How much work is required post arrival. Lots more with heritage where the others will see and work with you to ensure you have a functioning piece. There is often room for improvement on any functioning piece. Except a kibler that will spark with sandstone in it just by looking at it. Of course kibler isn't making anything comparable so there isn't any other option.

Thanks. Here are two photos of the Sea Service pistol, long version. It's about 50% longer and twice as heavy as I had imagined (19" long, and just under 3 lbs, near as I could weigh it - I'll need to go to the gym and do some right arm curls). The left-facing picture shows the 7" belt hook.

Thank you. Yeah - I bought the pistol before I knew about rework or had any idea what "tuning the lock" meant. I'll post details about what I had to do once it's done.

I like shooting birdshot with mine. Flying clays is sporting fun with one of these. I use a 1733 French Dragoon.

I just built what looks just like the kit version of this. I purchased it from TOW for $199 for a complete kit incl the lock and belt hook. (crazy low price). It is much larger than I expected (much larger than the Pedersoli Kentucky pistol kit). It’s 19” long just like yours with a 12” .62 cal bore. I did have to tune the lock and resole the frizzen (easily done and new skill). I did make and soldered on a front sight. My plan is to build a case for it next. It is an absolute blast to shoot! I luv this pistol!!! Should have bought two of them before they sold out. Congrats on your new pistol! I suspect you’re going to love it!

Once they ran out of the complete kit, they started selling them without the stock but alas have sold out of those as well.
