Made my first paper cartridges for the Brown Bess.
I went with lube, so am thinking I'm going to prefer the smaller twisted end (I still tyed it) over the "flower end".

Nice Cartridges. When I make paper cartridges, I tie a string at the base of the ball. This keeps powder from filtering down around the ball. Then I use the paper as my Patch. Semper Fi.

Thanks.

I liked the look of that style, but more thread handling and tying didn't appeal to me. It's why I don't fish much anymore :(

The method I used had a fold of paper separating the ball from powder.

An acquaintance from the other side of town , dropped off his longrifle , fresh from the m/l deer hunting camp. He said he had dry balled the barrel ,and oddly, the ramrod was securely jammed in the r/r channel , backwards. Things can happened at deer camp ,and can frequently be explained by the quantity of alcohol involved. We'll never know , 'cause the universal by word is , what goes on at camp , stays at camp. Back to the rifle w/errant treatment. The stuck r/r is an easy fix . Removed the front lock bolt , in case the r/r end is trapped there , and it was not. The shop fix for a stuck r/r and not damaging it , is to put a strip of emery paper longways in the vise jaws and gently , but firmly tighten the jaws. Pull on the rifle stock firmly , and don't jerk the r/r. Usually the rod comes right out.
The stuck patched ball , was hammered completely against the breech face. Screwed the ball puller head into the lead ball. !st time failed , but we put the metal range rod in the vise , and I applied steady pressure pulling on the gun , while my buddy put a crescent wrench across the r/r shaft , and tapped with a ball peen hammer on the back of the wrench , against the end flat of the muzzle .. The stuck ball went "pop" ,and came out , on the end of the range rod. All was well ..........oldwood
