I picked up a full hair on moose hide at a rummage sale this fall and I now need some ideas on what to make with it. For some reason I keep drawing a blank on what to do with it. This is where you creative people come in. All ideas are welcome, thanks.

Ames if it were hairless I would have several ideas for it. I just don't know how to remove the hair and if I did, what would that side of the hide look like? Never seen nor heard of it being done before.

Perhaps a dry scrape for hair removal. if it looks ruff after the hair removal (now I have never done this) but maybe run a belt sander with a fine belt over it.

I wasn't kidding. 1 lb. calcium hydroxide per 10 gallons of water, per 20 lbs of hide. Stir it with a stick several times a day, 3-4 days. It looks the same as taking hair off a buckskin. Scrape it on a fleshing beam. De-lime with 10 gallons ammonium sulfate, stir often 4-6 hours.
Bulk chemicals can be had from any good mail order taxidermy supply company.

Off the shoulder side carry arrow quiver, hair on shot pouch flaps, hat bands, wrist trim on some "buckskin" mittens, fold a long rectangle of it over and around the edge of a basket quiver to quiet it,,, lots of small trim uses. Maybe a cap based on the "workman's cap," pattern (basically a few triangles sewn together) would be interesting?

If I was better at sewing I think a pair of mukluks or leggings would be nice. I have made holsters, belts and bags but never anything as intricate as mukluks and never hair on. I hate to mess up a nice hide. A vest would be nice and not so complicated. I think it may be a good place to start.

If you sell it I'd buy it if the price is right. There are many things to do with a hair on hide as listed above. I could use a hide that would last a life time of project doing -- for an old guy.
