Because they certainly don't seem to exist anywhere around me !

Doing a complete overhaul of a Kentucky Long I picked up from BigSkyRambler. (Great guy to do business with!)

Buried under decades of buildup is some beautiful wood but with some very shallow and discolored brass inlays. They were set with carbon steel screws that all corroded.
I'm redoing/deepening all the inletting and want to replace the steel screws with brass, but that's turning out to be far more difficult than I expected (It's always the thing you least expect to be the problem that becomes the biggest PIA!)

I need to match the size of the head and threads to the existing screws, I've no idea how to do that on the internet - Amazon being the place I can most easily find them.

I need to learn the proper wood screw nomenclature.
Any guidance ?

Go to McMaster Carr on line

I found 92406A197 which is a 3/4" long #8 flat head slotted brass wood screw with sharp point tip

If you click on Product Detail it will give you pictures and dimensions

If you want to look at a CAD drawing in 3D or 2D, select the file format and download the file

McMaster Carr has the best easiest to use website in the world so there is no excuse for you to navigate the site if I can do it

A box of 100 is $20.81

I'll bet shipping is $20

When you absolutely got to have it, they got it

good luck

and you can use brass screws and change the color like the model railroad folks do with brass black

I used it on my brass parts made for my 1850 half stock, used the black and it blended in like frosting on a donut

Exercise caution when using small brass screws. Sometimes they can twist off in the wood before they are driven home. If you do use brass, rub candle wax onto the thread. That will lube the screw and ease the installment of the screw. You might have to back the screw out once or twice to rub more wax on. It can save a lot of trouble. :thumb:

Woodworking stores sell solid brass slotted screws too.

Lowe's carries solid brass also.

You may have to plug your holes and redrill for the new screws.

Screw heads you can be resized with your hand drill, file and sandpaper.

No woodworking stores anywhere near me that I know of (very depressing)

Lowe's only has brass in Phillips head, same with Home Depot

I'm trying to find matching screws so as to avoid that, but it seems very likely that will be the road taken.

Trying to avoid that as well. If it comes all the way down to that I'll be at my friends house who has a small metal lathe making my own (actually coercing him into making them)

Steel screws are proper for muzzleloaders, old guns didn’t use brass screws. Re consider brass,
Sand off the blueing to make them a better match.
That would make my life much easier, just wire wheel the corrosion off the existing screws and reuse them
Guess what path I'm taking
Thank you all

If you have any stores in your locality, hardware, Menards, Farm Fleet type, Lowe's, etc, they usually have small brass wood screws for sale. Most of em have the isles with the assorted bins with every type of fastener you can name in various sizes and thread. Beats having to wait online for shipping, paying high postage, and you can take your screw or whatever in and make sure you get an exact fit and size. I get brass screws both wood and metal at my local ACE Hardware alot, plus alot of other oddball sizes where I don't want to get alot of em and never have use for. Ya can buy a box of 12/20 or just a few if desired. IMO if brass is what ya need and it bothers ya none in the least, get them. Don't think you'll be judged or given 40 lashes. Not going to affect the shoot-ability of the rifle any and I doubt anyone around you would give a hoot. Period correct stuff goes to far at times. We're not talking a historical museum piece here.

You can check out Fastenere Industrial Fastener Supplies Fastenere Wood Brass Flathead Slot Screws

They also have steel or about anything else you want. Several years ago, I had a hard time finding a #7X1/2" round head brass slot wood screw which is MILSPEC for the WWII M1C/D Leather Cheek Pads that we make. Since this screw is not common today, it took about a week of searching, and I finally called these folks and they said, yep we have them. Since that time, I've ordered other fasteners that are hard to find.
