My new Carry Piece

Ladies and Gentlemen meet "The Noisy Cricket" , I just got this Pietta 1860 snub nose in last week. Midway had them on sale for 320 so I jumped on it. I really don't like having to buy Cap and Ball Revolvers online sight unseen, but no problems so far. The gun is very nice actually, fit and finish is pretty good on this one. Timing is spot on, locks up tight, bore is centered, and the cylinder to barrel gap is in spec, actually on the tight end. I immediately disassembled it completely to smooth it up a bit, nothing major was found, sharp edges on the frame as usual and some rough spots in the hammer channel, taken care of by a few stones. I also installed a set of Slix Shot nipples. First time out was a 25 grain charge of 3f Goex, wad, .454 Ball. I got about a 4 inch group at 10 yards. Of Course it shoots about 6 inches high as all open tops do. I'll play with the load and see what shoots best. All in all it is quickly becoming my favorite cap and ball. I've been carrying it around the past few days, and I think it just may become my EDC! All in all, what a cool little piece, and that thunderer grip is SO comfortable.

I'm just going to say it.

It is beyond foolish to even consider a Pietta CnB revolver for serious carry and self protection. The time tested and proven reliability of Pietta lock works just isn't there. And not just Pietta. All reproduction revolvers are range toys.

Carrying that Pietta at the range is fine. Outside of that keep it at home.

Very nice! I've got a soft spot for the 1860 snubbies. Just a neat looking piece. Took it to my gunsmith for fitting and still just doesn't index smoothly on one chamber. Gun smith said it was the best he could do so not sure what the issue is there.

I just found a Nice looking Paddle Holster for it on Amazon. Look like a nice piece.

It will be gone through and Modified for reliability before it becomes my EDC.

Are you going to modify the steel the parts are made from?

Are you going to modify the metallurgy of the lock parts?

Are you going to make springs from scratch, so the failure rate drops to zero?

I hope Murphy doesn't come to visit you the moment you need to defend yourself.

I've carried a Pietta C&B and occasionally used it for something around the house... got varmints. If I absolutely had to carry it for martial purposes, I would do so reluctantly, but as they say, even a marginal gun is better than nothing. Mine is equipped with a cut off 5 1/2" barrel with a silver sight JB Welded to the barrel. The only reliability issue I have ever had with it is the tendency toward "cap sucking", which there is supposed to be a cure for.

I am thinking about a Uberti 1862 Police revolver though. It would fit nicely in my possibles bag.

To each their own I guess.

I heard the guy I used in the past (maybe thats you, different screen name back them) is only taking new guns or something. But the two he did for me years ago have been just as reliable as the day is long and they are cap and ball still. But they have NEVER failed to fire, NEVER had a cap jam, and NEVER broke any of the inferior metal parts . They both have many many pounds of powder through them as well.

The last thing anyone should take to a gunfight is a single action revolver with no chance of reloading.

Your comment of some gun is better than no gun is true. But we don't live a world where substandard guns are the norm.

Guess I don't understand the desire to carry a firearm with a proven rate of failure.
