50cal versus 50cal

When I go to the range, people will ask me about my flint lock. When I tell them it is a 50 caliber rifle, their eyes pop! All those black gun shooters imagine a 50 cal cartridge. I show them a 49 cal ball, and they settle down. I thought I might show the vast difference between the two. I scarfed this 50cal cartridge on my out or the Nom (Viet Nam). I thought the contrast between the two quite striking. I don’t know how many grains of smokeless backs up that round, but it must be 150+. I do know it makes a Big a** bang. A 50cal ball pushed by charcoal is an entirely different beast!

We all started wet behind the ears. Always good form to educate and inform rather than shun and ridicule.

Last time I went to my rod and gun club range there was a group of black rifle shooters there having a good time. When I broke out my TC flinter they all stopped shooting to watch. It was quite a hit with them and they eagerly asked alot of questions to which I was happy to oblige.

Kind of the same when I shoot my Pietta 1858 revolver and someone will ask what caliber? I say 44 cal. and right away they start spouting a 44 magnum right!

I never do that, I like the "eye pop" part more,

I shoot .54, I show'm a .535 ball, and explain it's bigger than a 50cal,,

One of my great joys is when the range is crowded with black rifles and my .54 goes off for the first time. All these heads pop up at once like a heard of deer when a car door slams.

Worked at a range a few times when I was younger (40's). The range was a touristy spot, you know 6 shots for a buck. A bunch of tourons was asking about the gun I was carrying and I told them it was a 45 ACP. Immediately they started calling it a 45 Magnum. Ignorance is bliss.

Sadly, the people making laws and regulations affecting MLs' are not only far more uninformed than our tactical friends, but TPTB are unwilling to learn and, in too many cases, so stupid that they are unteachable. JMHO.

Yup, at least one BILL I read specifically stated a Ban on "All 50cal and above Ammo" and went on with wording that DID include "antique firearms" (in regards to ammo).
That is why I stopped telling people the 'Caliber' of my .50cal and .75cal and simply tell them is a "Pennsylvania Flintlock" or a "Sea Musket Flintlock" and then let the conversation go where it may.

I had a good one out on Public Land (BLM) one day;
I pulled up to a common spot, there was a couple skeet shooters on one side of the hill and a van full of Pew Pew shooters on the other (Pew Pew: small caliber pistols).
Well, as usual I took the center spot...loaded up my .50cal Pennsylvania and fired.
Before I got my second round loaded one of the Pew Pew Shooters was walking over my way - I paused as I usually get a friendly on looker who want to ask a question or two...but this time this guy surprised me, he walked up and Ripped Into Me!

"I KNOW THIS IS PUBLIC LAND BUT IM TRYING TO TEACH A CLASS HERE AND YOU SHOW UP WITH A (naughty word) CANNON!!"

Whoa, I wasnt sure what to say next....he walked back over to his Pew Pew group...i thought a moment, listened to the Shotguns on my right, listened to their 'ping ping' on my left, then put the Pennsylvania down and loaded up the Blunderbuss (with an extra charge) and let her BLOW!

Well, after one more shot from the Blunderbuss I saw them load up and leave.....sorry, I thought he said "I want to Hear a g'd cannon"

That guy should come out other days when the Real High Power shooters show up!!

.....note: I'm not normally spiteful like that, but that guy had a real attitude problem

Well, I can't say I would react to a rude ignorant touchhole like that much differently than you did. It's a shooting range, loud things happen there
