but, I just don't know what! If it was your bag, what would you do to it, if anything?

I'd take a thin and narrow strip of different color leather or wool tape and fold and stitch a bound edge around the flap edge.

Examples:

During,

After,

Another example for comparison and of wool tape being used,

Easy (though a bit tedious) to do, big effect from a small detail.
Even the same thing done with the same leather will add a finished look to the flap.

Wow, there are some really great ideas here! This bag will be my primary for the Lyman Trade Rifle. I have smaller bag for day hunts with the Crockett rifle I'm putting together. Really appreciate all the replies and ideas! :thumb: ☕

I was kind of thinking some beads on the fringe spaced every other one. No?
Fringe is like Brussel sprouts, you either love it or hate it. I fall into the latter. Like Brussel sprouts there is nothing you can do to make it better in my mind. But aesthetics, being in the eye of the beholder, YMMV

Some find Sam Brinton pleasing to the eye.... 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣🤣🤣🤣 @Urban Coyote

@SantiamSam I had the same thoughts on my bag awhile back. I had never tried any leather tooling before so it's not very good. But does add a little to an otherwise plain bag. I used a small U gouge to make the cuts then added some dark stain to the cuts.

Not sure what happened but I got posted mid-sentence. Maybe a year end gremlin. Should have stated to apply the leather antiquing gel to the leather to add some visual age. I would suggest dark brown. Use will take care of the rest.

No!
The beads will make it look like it came from a gift shop at a "historic" tourist stop.

I agree with the person who said to cut the fringe narrower. Cut each one at least in half width wise, if you can get three out of each one even better. I would cut it shorter too, but that's me.

I like that a lot. What method did you use to do it?

Appreciate all the suggestions, tips and replies! I won't be updating this post anymore. I went to town and picked up a few items from Hobby Lobby to well, change it some. Got home, proceeded to screw the bag up and just threw it in the scrap pile! I'm not going into detail so, best to just let this die and I'll save up for a real nice one I don't have to do anything to! ☕
