Pawn Shop Blasphemy

If you are handy with machine tools, the mount holes aren’t too far back, the bore is redeemable and you love to sweat, curse and pray for forgiveness at the same time…Go! It’l never be a TC again any way so make it your own conversion. Best to you!

Oh yes, definitely do that.

Could a person TIG weld those holes, especially if they don't go all the way through? Not sure if it would cause some funny stress fractures around the weld.

If not weld I'm sure a silicon bronze braze would fill them and put some strength back in, just wouldn't look as good as steel weld.

I always get my health advice off of forums from people I have never met, know me only by my forum name, are totally untrained in anything medical and once had a second cousin's friend who knew someone who had a cough and pain JUST LIKE I HAVE.

And I mean. Its only 4 holes that are threaded. If anything tack welds would do it. Heck filling in with JB weld would work if it isnt drilled completely through and you dont mind 4 odd colored dots lol

Stock isnt the prettiest but definitely not the worst I ever seen.
Front sight has fiberoptic.. rear looks standard to me anyways. From what I could see with a flashlight of theres.. the bore had some light rust. Grooves looked ok from the light I had.



Million dollar question is should I go and rescue this rifle.... fling the scope in a dumpster.... and give it the proper TLC and bring it back to life.

I tried haggling them down from the $149 tag and lowest they will go is $140 plus tax which is kinda silly to me. Looks like $100 gun at best.

I seen a.50 cal t/c Hawken in a local pawn shop.Looked good on the outside,stock ,blueing,etc.I have a bore camera and went out to my truck to get it when I came back into the store the owner asked me what I intended to do with this .I said I’m interested in buying this but need to see what the bore looks like. Told me he couldn’t allow me to do that…So I was going to run the ramrod down the barrel just i case of a blockage or stuck bullet…no dice..Buy it as is or Leavel.so I left ..must have had something to hide…!! Can’t be to trusting at Pawn shops….!!

Yea I would have left as well. I put the ramrod in the barrel and it bottomed out. So it definitely wasnt loaded.

First off, make sure it is not loaded! Especially if you are going to start poking around trying to clear a nipple or flash channel. Just because it is in a store (gun or pawn) doesn't mean they know what they are doing. Check it!

Next, my son brought me a TC Hawken that his Father in Law has. Got the cleaning rod stuck. Close exam and quickly determined the scope mount holes were too deep. While they did not "break thru", they pushed enough material into the bore to cause a blockage. Measured with calipers, the scope mounting holes were as deep as the barrel thickness! Told him to forget trying to retrieve the rod and get a new barrel.

Not that it may happen, but it isn't just the holes, it is the weakened "fracture line" set up by the holes that really are the issue.

You could use some set screws to fill the holes. File them down if they protrude much. Red locktite the screws before installing.

Yeah, too many crooks in that business. In my experience, hookers are more trustworthy.

Until you try and make change for a 20

If you fill the holes with correct size set screws and thread locker or JB Weld (epoxy) you could shoot the thing forever and not blow out or back out the screws. Black powder doesn't generate enough pressure and you can't load it quickly enough to heat the barrel up and compromise a small threaded hole properly filled. If it did flintlocks with touch hole liners would be opening up everywhere.

I'd buy it. Last $100 gun that I was able to find was 5 years ago. A CVA mountain rifle. Gentleman also had a Navy Arms Buffalo hunter for $125 but I didn't have the extra cash on hand at the time. Regret that now.

My personal experience over the years has been 1. if I question the value of an item and 2. If I haven't even purchased it yet and already have plans of fixing it thats two strikes and walk away.
Since I've come to that realization I've been much more content with life.
I have overpaid for things that were right as rain and I eventually get over the buyers remorse. When I spend good money on something I don't like they way it is at the purchase it never goes well. What's to gain? Fix it and flip it? What's your time worth? As I said good luck either way. Trust what your gut said when they wouldn't budge on the price I'm thinkin. Just my humble opinion.
