Don't want to hijack this thread, but since I have a similar issue (rusty/pitted bore) I'll add a question to the conversation. Before I send the barrel to Mr. Hoyt for relining I thought I'd try boiling it out followed by the scotchbrite or choreboy treatement, or may try soaking in molasses. I have a bluing tank long enough to immerse the barrel. So, the question is would it be advisable to remove the rear sight before subjecting the barrel to all this torture treatment? Thanks in advance.

I generally start with hot soapy water (Murphy's Oil Soap) with stainless bore brushes and a non-wooden range rod. Then I shoot it to see how it groups. Depending upon the results, I will either shoot and clean several more times or reduce the price and sell it "as is". Reboring and/or making a smoothbore out of it sounds like a good alternative though. I tend to stay away from most chemicals. Some of them make a bad problem worse.
