When doing a bess musket are the taps provided by TOW of sufficient length to tap the various surfaces using the drilled holes as guides (as instructions indicate)...or do you have to take out the various pieces (thumbpiece, trigger plate, lockplate) and finish the taps. 8-32 and 10-32 taps. my taps are only 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 in length. I still have to buy their blind hole tap for the thumbplate. Thanks

I set myself up for that response :) . Let me reword. If a tap is not long enough to finish the entire threading if using the bolt hole as a guide... Is it OK to take the tap out and restart it with the piece in hand. I've tapped before but just started and finished. Not sure if this is a tapping no-no. My understanding is that you want to use the bolt holes for thumbpieces and tangs as guides to get the correct angle. Thanks

I just mentioned TOW as I get supplies from them often.

It is best to tap through the guide hole if at all possible. You could grind and reduce the shank (unthreaded portion) of the tap body to get some extra depth to the tap or buy a pully tap they are longer. If you have the means, you can weld or braze on an extension to the back of the tap, but you will have to grind and reduce the shank (unthreaded portion) of the tap body to get some extra depth also.
