So I’ve had a few smooth bores over the years, for some reason or another I ended up selling them. Well, I made a deal with another forum member here, for yet another Fowler, this one’s from Jackie Brown. It had a few small issues that I took care of this morning, one was the pan wasn’t flush with the barrel, the other was the forestock was loose from the barrel. Initially I thought the lug had came loose, it turned out to be a bent pin, I cleaned the internals of the lock and lightly oiled them. Then I went to work on the gap between the pan and the barrel, it’s not perfect yet, but it’s much better. I’d say that this one of Jackie’s better builds and the overall construction is pretty spot on. I’ll be measuring the bore with calipers tomorrow to see what the ball mold will be. I’m really excited to fire this off, the L&R lock seems to shower sparks into the pan very nicely.

Here’s the finished product, the changes are subtle, but yet agreeable to my eye.

The forestock was very thick and the ramrod and thimbles were somewhat buried in the channel, i thinned that area, then focused on the forestock just in front of the lock, it was “ blocky the ramrod entry area looked more of a SMR with an abrupt 90 degree cutoff, i slanted that and thinned that area as well. Then went to the comb, to me it looked more like a SMR style comb, so I sloped it and rounded it off. I also thinned some of the wrist, it had a “hump” on the side.. so I’m overall really happy with my redo, it took me two days on and off to do this. I used a really nice rasp that a fellow member here named LME sent to me..it worked like a charm for rough work. Anyhow I’ll be measuring the bore and patterning this very soon… will update if anyone is interested .

Nice work!! I have a J Brown Trade Gun. Quality materials, but had to tweak it a bit to be perfect. You did well!!
Yep I agree, he uses quality stuff… it’s just in the formation of the gun where he gets a little off kilter from time to time. That trade gun looks pretty nice to my eye.

I measured the bore and it’s .601-605… it has also shown at .599 depending on where you put the calipers at. Thier cheap harbor freight digital calipers… so I’m not 100 percent sure on thier accuracy. I’ll be looking for a 580-585 round ball mold I think. Any other ideas as to a ball size? I’m going to do both bare ball and patched ball to see which is a better group.
