Howdy boys.

I have a chance to pick up a few unopened cans of Goex 2F.

My question is this. Is it ok to use in my Traditions Fox River Fifty .50cal?

I think Im understanding that 3F is ideal to use in a caplock. But Im not sure about 2F.

I dont wanna miss a opportunity here if there is one.

Thanks

Cheeze, buy it already! It'll be fine and thousands of guys would love to be able to get their hands on "a few unopened cans"!

Who'da thunk a fellow on a muzzle loading site would be the one to inform me of the "hidden" cent sign key on modern keyboards? Who sez muzzleloaders are stuck in the 19th Century! thanks!

For many many years 2F was considered the best load for calibers above 45, 3F below 45. It is only recently that people have started using 3F in 50 and larger calibers, many just because you can get more shots. I know some very serious target shooters who prefer 2F in 40 calibers!

I use 2F in my .45 caplock by preference. It works great!

Get it. Do load development. Be happy.

Using 2f regular Goex (or Scheutzen) in a 50cal, you may see heavier fouling than with 3f. With that as a known issue, there's no problem using it.

To the comment about using 3f for more shots per pound. That is NOT the reason we do it in N-SSA competition. We do it because of fouling control. Fouling in a minie ball rifle is a variable that must be controlled to maintain accuracy through a string of shots. Using 3f makes this much easier and less of an issue. A side benefit is more shots per pound. Some in the N-SSA do use 2f in rifle muskets, but if you start looking through the teams, 3f is much, much more prevalent. Perfect example- when doing load development for my 42 Macon 69cal smoothbore, I tried 2f as part of the development process. Fouling was heavier than with 3f Old E. Heavier fouling in this gun leads to harder loading (we don't have time to wipe) and then to loss of accuracy as a shot string goes on. That's much less of a problem with 3f Old E (now Swiss). With 2f, I could go about 4 shots before loading got difficult and accuracy started to fall off. Using 3f cured that and now I can go up to 12 shots straight before problems begin to rise and since we shoot against the clock, time will have expired by the 10th.

I use both depending on what the rifle (pistol) likes. They all have a preferance.

I was lucky this summer, grabbed a $150.00 Mossyoak bow holder pack (as new), three cans of 2f Goex and 3 pounds of RS pyrodex unopened and sevaeral boxes of Hornandy .50 for $80.00.

I've shot thousands of rounds through my CVA Mt. Rifle over the last 40+ years. I still get a 2" or better group at 50y and same point of impact using 70g 3f or 80g 2f Goex. As others have mentioned I prefer 3f as there is less fouling. I very rarely have to clean at the range when using 3f.

I have a couple of .54 GPR that shoot similarly with 90 3f and 100 2f. These loads need more work to shrink the groups, but I'm into flinters now and may never get to it.

I use 2f goex in my fox river fifty. Shooting a 360 Lee Minnie. I would use 3f also though I haven't worked a load up for that. Might be a little more efficient as short as the barrel is. I run out of 2f goex I'll probably have to work up a load for my homebrew. Can't get it to shoot a ball worth a manure but 80-100 grs under that Minnie will do one hole at 50 yards as long as I keep shooting it.

When I use GOEX FF in my 45 which has a drum and nipple I get hang fires and sometimes it refused to fire.
When using FFF, it fires instantly every time.
So there are some rifles out there that will not like FF.
