What are you going to use it for?

I do not waste my money on it, do not need it.

I love Ballistol. A little goes a long way. I don't clean bores with it. Just a light coat after cleaning. Works great as a protectant on all metal surfaces. Won't damage wood stocks. Doesn't gum up. Doesn't dry out. I put the stuff on everything. Though I did go back to maple syrup on my pancakes.

I haven’t priced any in a while. A came across an online sale a couple of years ago and bought 4 or 5 bottles. I use it sparingly most of the time, I doubt if I’ll ever need to buy anymore. I like Ballistol, used it many years. But there are many different ways to clean so pick your favorite.
I was actually going to shoot you a message about it since we both deal with the same humidity.

I must admit I looked at ebay pricing before other online prices. 1st mistake lol

I use it as moosemilk mixed 7 parts water to 1 part ballistol. I spray a little down the bore and on the lock and let it sit 10-20 minutes after shooting. But what a really use for cleaning is Witches Brew, which is equal parts of rubbing alcohol, hyd. Peroxide, and murphy’s oil soap. That cuts the crud nicely. And if I’m out of Witches Brew I use Dawn and hot water from my shop sink. After it’s clean and dry I wipe the bore and outside, lock, and wood with ballistol on a rag. But that’s just me, lots of folks do it differently.

For the cost of this stuff.... will I shoot 10 rings all day? Seems a bit steep.

Are there is other cheaper alternatives or is this one if those obvious things that you dont skimp on.
Save yer money. It is the wurstest stuff ever. There are hundreds of alternatives. Stick with this forum and do searches for recommendations on all your lube and cleaning needs.

I use it to lube and clean guns, mixed with water works super at removing BP fowling. After wiping it leaves a thin oil coating to protect against rust. As a general lube on other household things, and to clean and condition leather specially holsters and slings. Will not harm wood finishes either.

I started using it several years ago and like it. At first I hated the odor, but it kind of grows on you. Folks who say it stinks, also says Hoppes and WD-40 stinks, both of which I like as well. I bought some originally so I could try Dutch Schultz accuracy method for dry patches, and as "Moose Milk". I like the Ballistol especially when I don't have time to do a through cleaning. When I'm through shooting, I will squirt a little down the bore then followed up with a few patches. I spray and wipe down the lock and breech area with Ballistol and brush down the lock and breech area with a toothbrush. I have never experienced any signs of rust, even after leaving for up to a week. For the 6 oz. spray cans, I ordered three cans through Amazon a few weeks ago for less than $34 delivered, and that includes tax. I buy the large 16 oz. cans from Brownells or Midway.

Hickok45 shows more than I can describe in this video, starting about the 23:50 mark.

Ballistol for cleaning unmentionables. Dawn and hot water for cleaning BP guns. I do wipe both down with a light film of Ballistol after. It doesn't take finger prints or smudges. Seems to repel dust. And I've yet to find rust where I have used it. I don't like to pay for aerosol so use a spray bottle.
I do not however trust it as a lubricant. I follow the old armorer's maxim:
If it turns oil it. If it slides grease it.

It's certainly not required for cleaning and even for dry patching there are other oil options..... A little ballistol does go a very long way but plain old water will clean a gun just fine. Haven't tried it for rust preventative myself since Im perfectly happy with barricade which is much cheaper and locally available.

Windshield washer fluid has all the magical components - water, soap, and alcohol. Been using it for decades with absolutely no drama of any kind. Also, a lifetime supply costs about $3.

To clairify, I do not use it for cleaning per say but use soap & water. It is, however, pretty amazing what a ballistol patch will pull out of the bore after a good cleaning sometimes. It does a marvelous job of removing fouling from the exterior of the gun as well. I also mix it 50-50 with beeswax for a patch lube and to seal gaps in the wood to metal fit at the outside of the gun and tha barrel channel.
