Hi everyone,

I have heard of lots of you using bald face hornet nests for shotgun wadding. How do you harvest the nests? To use them for historically correct wadding?

I have used both hornet and wasp nests and like them. While occupied it can be tricky but the lodgers add to your lube.
Seriously though do get them as soon as the residents leave and they fall apart. I've also seen hornet nests that were attractive to bears.

Please do a search, 100's of recommendations to do it.

The paper wasp nest are easier to work with. But the Bald Face nest are neat and as said, work fine, but I’ve never used it. If you have one located, wait till after your second hard freeze to grab it. All the hornets die except the queen, she spends the winter underground and starts a new hive in the spring.

I have used nest for wadding. Works well. I have always used it dry. Really gets dirty after a few shots. Is there a lube that I should be using to help keep it a bit cleaner?

I have heard of corn shucks being used as wadding in frontier days. Anyone tried that?

I found two this early season when I was out in the woods.
