I have 3, 50 caliber Muzzleloaders and they are all one in 48 twist. I year ago I acquired a 45 with a one in 60 twist. It seems to be more accurate with less fussing around over patches and such, is it feasible to bore a 50 out to a 54 And what do think that it would cost, and is it feasible in a Lyman flintlock? How about a traditions percussion? Both rifles are a Hawkins Design.

What's Bobby Hoyt's lead time right now? I have a trashed 50 cal myself I'd like to get bored out smoothbore.

50 to 54 pretty much ok as long as it's a teast 15/16". However, Hoyt would be the final say on it. The Traditions is iffy because of the breech system. It might be doable if YOU removed the breech. Another thing to get straight from Hoyt.

I've had three 1:48 tc barrels re bored by him and they all went from good to excellent đź‘Ť

Probably the wrong time of the year for a rush job. You know, hunting season…… Seem to remember Mr. Hoyt usually taking time off for hunting around this time of year. Best to call him and ask.
Never said it was any kind of rush. It's only been sitting around here like that for 10 years or so. Would make a nice turkey gun being one of those unmentionable muzzleloaders, instead of just sitting there.

Last I heard he was 6 months backlogged, and there's usually plenty of people around the 'net who know his current status on stuff. Surprised nobody here seems to know.

I had Bobby Hoyt bore out a barrel I had that was damaged and it was a quick turnover. The price surprised me as it was much less than I'd heard previously. But I contacted him June 2021 which doesn't seem to be a busy time of year.

I have 4 .45 rifles and one has a 25" X 15/16" barrel. I'm a little bit interested in having it bored out to .54 as it is very light unlike my other .54 which is 10.5 lbs.

I now have 5 B. Hoyt barrels , 3 are rebores 2 45 to 50 and 1 50 to 54 great plains rifle (now with my son in Co) 3 are gain twist
call early he doesn't hear the phone once the machines startup

I think Bobby is working on Traditions now. I talked to him recently about boring out and putting in a liner, or whatever he thinks is best, in my 32 caliber Traditions Crocket making it into a 36 caliber and he said no problem. I'm presuming he'll have to remove the breech plug to do that. But call him to find out.

What calibre and twist did you end up with ?

Last year in April it took Mr. Hoyt about 2 months after being told it would 4 or more. He's a good businessman in giving longer wait times than they usually are. Nobody complains when something gets done sooner but heaven help you if it's later. Been there, done that and always told customers it would take much longer wait than needed. Helped thin out the hurry up and get it fixed so I can flip it riff raff. Collectors were willing to wait for good work.

I sent him a brand new 1" renegade 50 and a roached out 54 Hawken 1" both to be 58. The third was my original tc 50 15/16 to be bored to 54. I planned on giving one of the 58 to a grandson who has a 50 Renegade but he wanted to stick with his 50 so i sent one down the road.

So, to answer your question, I told Hoyt I wanted them rifled to what, in his opinion, would work best. So that's what he did and I never asked him what twist he did. I trusted him to know what to do and my trust was well placed. All three are excellent shooters. Maybe someday the mood will strike me and I'll measure the twist. ;)

Told Mr Hoyt the same thing the first time I sent him a barrel to rebore to 58 caliber. He told me he would make it 1-60 with radius bottom rifling. That was about 10 years ago. I now have Hoyt 58 caliber T/Cs in both flint and percussion.
