Many folks do not realize when in a 'no signal' area for the cell phone, texts will still get out. They go on a different frequency, or sumptin'.
Correct, the protocol for texts is different than that for calls. In many survival beacons etc that is the type of protocol used because it goes farther, easier.

No cell service where I hunt, whether it be antelope or deer and elk. Most of the time... not even at camp.
Garmin mini 2 is my answer to that question. There are others of like ilk. The hardest part for a rescuer is FINDING that person. The hardest part for the rescuee is letting someone know you need rescuing.

Don't let non-life threatening injuries (or situations) turn into a fight for life or death.

many people forget that Mother Nature can be a real "mother", does not care who you are and takes no prisoners!!

Yes. I was the OIC of Search and Rescue for MCAS El Toro and Miramar...We had all on shore SAR from LA county south to the Mexican border and east to the AZ border. I carry a minimum of 3 things when out. Garmin Mini, Strobe light and a flash light. Others things as the situation warrants..extra water, some kind of wind/water barrier (emergency blanket fills the bill) fire making supplies, TQ and an Israeli bandage.....all depends on what/where/how far/if I have company.

Items to help me be found and stuff to keep me alive until I am found! sar.jpg

yes, always good to anticipate and prepare.

I responded to this thread back in the summer. Since then I’ve acquired my Jaeger flintlock- and organized a bag for it. The contents are different than I described back then. The shooting bag is for managing the rifle. Here’s a pic:

Like other folks here, I carry a cellphone. I usually have my haversack made of oilcloth. In it I carry whatever plunder I decide I need. This might be a snack, water, game camera, gloves, or whatever.

I shoot from the bag regardless, however I do reduce the stuff in my bag just for weight and convenience.when I’m hunting I take my lube, capper, patches, balls, small tool kit and horn. That’s about it. If I’m shooting a match I’ll take a little bit more, fire kit, different lube and etc, if I’m shooting at home I normally stuff my bag full of unnecessary items, just to irritate myself…. lol

Looks good. May want to come up with something to keep your roundballs in unless I missed it. I also find that a small roll (maybe held in a roll with a pipe cleaner or two) or square cut cleaning patch material gets use.

Thanks. There is an internal pocket that holds the round balls. I keep a wad of patched in the patch box on the rifle.

Ah, the patch box on the rifle. I keep a ball puller and patch puller rapped in cleaning patch material there. Unlikely to use, but stays with the gun. With the ball puller on one end of the ramrod and the jag on the other (assumes there are threads and they all match up), you have just enough ramrod length to usually pull a dryball. And just as a side note, make sure the ends on your ramrod are pinned.

Nice set up

First, since tone cannot be relayed via text, I want to say I'm not being snarky with this question.

What advantage do you find in keeping ball in a separate shot pouch, or closely together in a pocket vs. loose in the bottom of the shooting pouch?

Myself, I carry them loose, for they are easy to reach in and grab.

I use a shooting block, so I carry spares in a small leatehr pouch in my bag. Not many,5-6 . I have three rounds in the shooting block. If I miss with all three, I need to call it a day and go home!

When I am hunting with round ball, I also carry a loading block for quick follow up shots.

Tone understood. That’s a pretty big bag and it’s easier to get to the little pocket. I’ll shoot a pic later of the inside.

Like you, it’s easier to reach in and grab where I have them.

I always like to travel walking that is with the basics in the bag at a minimum. If I'm walking long distances.
Quick loads too.
I keep a 1.5" wide length strip of long underwear for spit patch cleaning in between shots too.

I just find that with the my roundballs in a shot pouch, separate pocket in my bag or in a loading block they are easier to keep track of than if they are rolling around loose somewhere in the bottom of my bag. Makes reloading quicker for me. Prefer fewer loose items in my bag, but nothing wrong with having your roundballs loose in the bottom of your bag if it works for you.

What, how and where am I hunting? I will lug some extra weight if I am still hunting as, for example, on a deer stand. The chill can get to you when you sit still for a while. Some fatty high protein high energy snacks. Maybe a thermos of something hot.

But if I am following a dog I try to strip out all non essentials. Maybe six pre measured shot charges in pill bottles. Small horn. Pan primer. Knife. Compass. Matches. Cel phone. Map if in an unfamiliar area. Sandwich.

Essentials: Warm hat. Wool socks. Underwear to suit the day. Water if there is no potable to be had on the ground. Cel phone. Compass. Matches. Knife. Someone who knows where I was going and when to expect a call saying I am back. Some kind of iron ration. Rolled up waterproof survival blanket/poncho. Map or local knowledge. And obviously what you need to operate your gun.
