Would any members know what serial number started production in Spain. Just trying to work out where mine was made.

There's no country of origin on barrel and serial number starting in 001

Also, looks like you have a "Big Bore" they did not have patch boxes and were offered after the Made in USA rifles were produced.

My CVA BBMR is clearly marked made in Spain. Nothing wrong with that, I was under the impression all BBMRs were.

I believe you are correct, the big bore Mt. rifle wasn't introduced until after the switch to Spanish barrels. I believe the Spanish barrels are every bit as good as the US ones anyway.

I've not had a big bore, but I have two Made in USA and one Spanish made. The only reason I prefer the made in USA is the better patch box [my opinion] and the hexagonal ramrod guides. All shoot very well. Polecat added: one of the Made in USA types has considerable curl in the maple stock as well.

Just for archive/info purposes, I have a “Made in USA” marked .45 Mountain Rifle barrel in a stock with the later Spanish features. May have been a kit, or maybe a parts gun. I know it will flat out shoot, it makes me look and feel pretty good. It has come around in the rotation again so I am going to shoot it at our club match this weekend with my .45 Mountain Pistol. Oh, the Mountain Pistol shoots pretty good too!

I have two. One is an American made .50 caliber that I inherited from my grandfather. The other one is a newer Spanish made rifle that I purchased so that I could retire grandad’s rifle from the deer woods. There are some VERY subtle differences, but the most obvious is that the earlier rifle is marked “Made in USA” and the later one is not. Both shoot equally well.

Not the clearest photos, but these are of the U.S. made rifle.

I recall reading somewhere that just because it says “made in the USA” doesn’t mean the barrel was made here. Only the first year (or possibly only the prototype) may have been Douglas barrels. The contract for the barrels went to Spain, made to CVA’s specifications, early on and they were assembled here in the USA. Great shooting barrels regardless of production location.

Finally got to shoot the new rifle today and was very impressed, first shot took out the patch sticker pulled the second as I'm definitely not used to the set trigger and the light trigger pull and third shot touching the first. Definitely totally different to the flinch locks I'm used to.

The CVA Mountain Rifles were made in .50 calibre & .45 calibre. They had patch boxes.

The CVA Big Bore Mountain Rifles were in .54 calibre & .58 calibre, these did not have patch boxes.

Not meaning to hijack this, but thanks, Rock fotgis info. Couldn’t figure out why my .54 flint MR had no patch box.

No Longer Confused
