Oh, hey, Banjoman here. So, this may not be what you think it is.😄

Went up on the mountain today and shot the Traditions Kentucky, .50 caliber percussion rifle. All shots were from the standing, off hand position, shooting from the bag. Load used was 50 grains of Pyrodex RS, raw sheep’s wool wadding, .490 lead round ball, and topped off with another wad of sheep’s wool.

So how’d we do?

Not bad. Life is good.

And remember, ear and eye protection is strongly recommended.

@Banjoman, so no patch? I can remember shooting a Kentucky rifle one of my friends had when we were in our early teens. No patch, just the lead ball and it shot pretty well.

Nope, no patch. I even took a few shots with just powder, bare round ball and some wadding on top to hold it in. Groups remained about the same. Good enough for plinking.

I’ve loaded like this before but with wasper nest or jute tow. From a good bench rest I was able to consistently hit skeets at 50 yards. Those Spanish made rifles are good guns.

So is the wool making the ball respond to the rifled barrel as if it were a smooth bore I wonder ? Very interesting phenomenon ! If the accuracy falls apart at 75 yards and beyond then we may have an answer.
