Have an older CVA Hawken pistol in .50 cal. The trigger guard is broken and so far, internet search has turned up nothing. Hoping some one might have one collecting dust in a parts drawer

Solder joint would show, brazing is using brass to weld it back together. A real nice brazing job and some careful filling would be almost invisible.
Maybe Dixie gun works would have something close to replace it.

Thanks for the post Jim. I dont have a torch for brazing unfortunately. But that would be the best way to repair.
I looked at Dixie, didnt really see anything close, but did shoot them an email with questions.

Thanks again
Bill

It might be just as well that you don't have a torch. Brazing brass, specially cast, is not a job for a novice and being thin like that would compound the difficulty.

That's not really a "Hawken" which CVA called a Mountain Pistol. That trigger guard and grip are quite different from the usual CVA offerings.

With my experience recently trying to find a CVA Kentucky pistol trigger guard, odds are you won't find one of those either.

I settled for a "classic english" style trigger guard from muzzleloader builders supply.

A bunch fancier than the original, and a lot more inletting, but I really like it better.

A silver soldered joint would be easier to do and if it was clamped well it wouldn’t be very noticeable.
That bit of custom work on the grip is nice.
I am leaning towards the silver solder repair.
Finding a replacement is looking grim unless I just find something close and modify to fit.

Thanks for the info. Would you have a pic and part number you could share ?

Morning, Thanks for the post and idea. I hadnt thought about going that direction. I do have some buffalo scales left over from my knife making days.

At least for me, building, fixing, tinkering, etc. with the guns is a big part of the interest in this hobby. I wouldn't pay someone to do my hobby for me!

If I may suggest contact Traditions because that guard is very similar to their 50 cal trapper pistol guard

If you are not in a big hurry you can send it to me and I'll braze it back together at no cost to you.
All I ask is that you pay the return shipping.
Wow... that is a very generous offer andy52. Thank you !!!!

I am in no hurry, and that will be better than me trying to make a different guard fit correctly.

I will shoot you a pm.

That's what makes this such a great forum. People like andy52 offering to help a brother ML shooter out.

Have a great day

Very simple job, might take me 15 or so minutes, setup will take longer than the brazing.
