We recently did the Petersburg National Battlefield tour, and I gotta say, it was the best $5 I've spent in a LONG time! I was in cannon heaven, as well as greatly educated about the siege of Petersburg. Took a bunch of pics, here are some of the cannons:

Thanks! The last time I visited Petersburg the mortar, Dictator, had been removed for conservation work. Has it been returned? It was on the trail that is below the fort you photographed.

I saw the Dictator mortar the last time I was there. It was mounted on a railroad carriage type mount. The tunnels to the mine that exploded, forming the crater, had just caved in.

Awesome pics! I wish we had stuff like that out here in Cali, all we got is some old gold mines and some some mining towns...still cool, but they need a few cannons...

The replica of the Dictator mortar was there on the path below the battery in the first photo, but we hit that last and were tired, so we didn't take the walk down the trail to see it. We did see the photo of the original in the visitor's center, though.

Many thanks, Great clear pictures. I haven't been to Petersburg in over 30+ years. Shame to see all the cannon barrels just lying around without carriages.

What model camera did you use? :hmm:

Heh... honestly, we forgot to take our good cameras, so the photos were taken with a little disposable we bought at the visitor's center. I had them give me a PhotoCD when they developed the pictures so I could post them up.
