I have a swivel gun and a BP Stokes mortar of beer can caliber. Dusting them off for the Fourth, and got to wondering how you would go about making a projectile which would produce an air burst. Yes. I know the feds don't want any munition that would explode after leaving the muzzle. So a strictly hypothetical question.

In theory you could go to some of the fireworks supply websites as they have materials to possibly make what you have in mind.
You can't have an Air Burst W/O an explosion after leaving the barrel.
Yes. That is why this is hypothetical. A matter of strictly intellectual curiosity.
Heavyweight shipping tube, cut about a dozen pieces of cardboard to the inside diameter of the tube and glue six together to make a wad for both ends. Glue one end and let dry. Make a packet of about two ounces of powder, and place it in the tube. take the remaining plug and drill a hole in the center and glue it into the other end let dry. Load your mortar, place the fuse in the tube with a length that you want the timed to go off, light the fuse and send it skyward.

I suggested that you visit a Fireworks stand and check out the festival balls or Artillery shells. they are legal and have their own tube. Usually 10 shots per kit. Sorry, but I can't give you that info. I wouldn't even tell my Late brother in law of 48 yrs. I won't reveal any Info that could get someone into trouble or worse yet hurt or killed. It was our family Business ,WE put on shows and shipped all over the country including Disneyland. So PLEASE leave it to the Professionals. Any use of a fuse would be too dangerous because even if its long the muzzle blast would probably ignite it at the base and you could have a pipe bomb.
We were at an Independence Day Fireworks celebration about 15 years ago at a local high school. The whole shebang was at the football field. The fireworks were in the southern end behind the goal line. The people were about 60 yards north. One of the mortars fell over, pointed directly north, and people scattered like a covey of quail. We rolled up in our blanket and hoped for the best. No one got hurt and after a rather lengthy silence, everyone started to laugh. Best Independence Day ever and no one got hurt.

We made around 50,000 shells a yr. from 3"-36" Diamiter .I Personally fired around 10,000 of those.We did it the old fashion way. Typical show would use 8 guns of var. dia. to fire 300-500 shells. 1guy lighting & 3 guys reloading as we went. firing rate of 20-25 shells a min.to insure NO dark spots. NOW DAYS if you have 300 shells they use 300 guns. Much safer.....I used a Road flare for lighting..Now they fire electricaley , again much safer....Thats why when I hear ( All ya gotta do is.) I just shutter....You can do every thing 100% right,,,100% of the time and STILL THINGS HAPPEN. YOU all have a safe 4th,,,,be safe......Wally
