Italian museum photo

Thought someone may find this photo interesting. My daughter is in Venice at a museum and sent me this. They look like wheel locks mostly, I think?

I can't say with all of them, but at least a few look like Snap-Matchlocks with a cheek style buttstock. Beautiful arms! Thanks for sharing!

Those are Japanese matchlocks known as teppō or tanegashima. The Japanese favored a snapping matchlock design based off a Malaccan design called an istinggar that the Portuguese brought from their colony in the Malay archipelago. Read "Tanegashima-The Arrival of Europe in Japan" by Olof G. Lidin for some good info on them!

They do look like Japoneese snap match locks seems odd but not impossible they are in Venice though similar guns where made in Venition regions of very similar styles perhaps by fluke made for that Japonese market but never sent .Interesting study but needs someone local to get a good look at them. It may add much to our study an important study if so .Dos'e the book you mention make any such link ? Regards Rudyard

Wow, awesome information. Now that you say Japanese, I can see that. I'd love to see a lock like that actually fire. I have some research to do. Ty
