My last purchase maybe 5 years ago was from the Rebel Trading Post booth at the nationals. I always bought them at the sutlers in person and they last so long I don't do that often. Some of mine are 30 years old.

I prefer the RCL6 type my self. I think they are easier to clean. I put them in a mesh laundy bag and wash them with my jeans, they come out nice and clean.

As a side note to the OP Tom A Hawk if you get some cap plugs, poke them all with a "needle" to put a minute air vent hole in them. Otherwise, after you put the inverted minnie in them, air pressure in the tubes will sometimes make the minnie pop out during transportation. And that makes a mess in your box.

I make them out of paper

Paper is the way to go, super easy with Masking Paper . I can roll up 50 of them in an hour.

I think the Caplugs are more for Skirmish shooters that can't use paper.

I haven't seen the cardboard tubes.

S&S Firearms has the stiff plastic tubes in .58 caliber, in three colors: Plastic Shooting Tubes

I bought a sackful of them from S&S some years ago. These appear identical to the RCL-6 tubes described by @dave951 (above), and in fact mine are embossed "RCL-6" on the base.

Best regards,

Notchy Bob

Not really. It's far easier to just charge the tube with powder, plug with a minie, dip lube and done.

Hi Tom

Yes, about 40+ years ago. I remember those cardboard tubes from Dixie. They were somewhat stiff cardboard that you could cut to any length. They also sold caps for the tubes separately if you wanted to cover both the powder charge and the slug. I used these back in the late 1960's with my Navy Arms Zouave. Eventually, the lube from the slug would tend to soften the cardboard. But they were cheap to buy and easily replaceable. Later on, it seemed many went to the soft plastic tubes.
