I looking to purchase some pure soft lead in small tiny pieces to hand cast balls. I've done a little bit of research on this and found what I wanted on track of the wolf labeled "Pure Soft Lead,
for hand casting round balls.
Over 10 pounds per box,
convenient small pieces". Unfortunately this item is on back order and I'm not sure how long it would take if I ordered it from here. I'm not looking to go all out into casting my own bullets just yet. I'm thinking of just getting a little bit along with a small leather pouch/bag to carry this with me along with my ladle. Does anyone know of a website or shop I could purchase this or a place to purchase the carrying bag as well? I'd like to purchase from a muzzleloading store to help out the community instead of buying from Amazon or some other place. Any suggestions or advice on this is much appreciated. I'm new to all this and doing lots of research lately on a little bit of everything muzzleloading shooting. I currently own a 1851 36 but will be looking to get a rifle soon. Not sure of what caliber I want yet. Saw a video of a guy walking thru woods and stops and cast a couple lead balls with his shot pouch and ladle and I thought..that's pretty cool, I want that in my muzzleloading everyday carry.

As to casting ball afield, that was done for a ball recovered from fallen game, or dug from a tree or ground after a shot. To think a hunter would carry un-cast lead with them to melt in the field is ridiculous.
If a person has a base camp, it makes sense to also leave the mold in camp, rather than carrying the extra weight.
A similar oddity is the person who will carry a hundred balls and a full pound of powder with them to hunt a deer. How many times are you going to shoot that deer?
To quote Thoreau, "Simplify!"

I didn't say anything about going hunting with this. I was simply asking where you guys buy your lead from. Don't give yourself a headache over trying to figure out what I'm doing.

You said you saw the guy casting in the field and wanted to do the same.
I saw a guy doing a video with a classic looking mold over a camp fire to cast a couple balls, he had a pouch of lead showing how someone might cast a couple balls back in the day. I found it interesting and would like to add something similar to my collection. I'm not trying to go full out into casting, I have a ladle and was wondering other places to purchase lead which alot of people have shared and I'm very thankful for them sharing. Where you got the idea I'm going hunting is what I'm wondering. Maybe you just troll people's discussions and look for ways to try to make yourself look smarter then them, idk, maybe your trying to tell me not to go hunting without ammo, idk, maybe you're thinking about hunting all the time. Idk. Thanks I guess, don't go hunting and trying to cast balls at the same time, got you.

As far as the mold, Larry Callahan makes fine bag molds there are others out there cheaper. As far as the bag, you can get for around $4.00 or $5.00 a leather pouch kit at Hobby Lobby and put it together and it will work. If you are not sure about sewing etc, Crazy Crow sells all kinds of stuff like that.

Here’s some of the places that I get free lead:

1. Walking along the road I search for wheel weights. Some work and some don’t but the ones that do are still free.

2. Along the lake banks and boat launches I look for lost sinkers or jig heads. These work very good.

3. I know a roofer who saves me lead flashing sometimes. They just discard it anyway.

Also, I cast all my round balls outside over an open fire. It seems more traditional that way.

Talk to roofers in your area.
These are usually FREE just for the asking:
