Wow, dayum … their early thinking was simply ingenious, no?

A dual-caliber - via a sub-caliber insert - matchlock arquebus dating from1670/90, from Coburg located in the upper region of Bavaria, Germany.

That would be a real challenge even today, and would need CAD and a LOT of setting-up skill and practical know-how. As for the cost - that too, is almost unthinkable.

And it's even rifled!! That's a really good trick making that spiraled insert on period equipment. It looks like there may have been a rear sight just forward of the lock. I would like to see the inside of that lock, also. Somone was an amazing gunsmith.

That is a wheellock rather than a matchlock. I've never seen anything like that sub-caliber insert for a muzzleloader, and I have my hands on hundreds if not thousands of muzzleloaders every year.

I'd like to know more, is this out of a book? If so, what book, if no, where did it come from?

Making the negative of the rifling wasn't necessary, but WOW!! That is some impressive work.

It would be today. They didn't have internet, TV, cell phones, or someone calling about your expired warranty to distract them. They had more time to concentrate on their work. However, to think up a barrel insert is really upper level.

Can I share these images on another forum, Flint?
The world should know! :)
Of course!

I had copied from somewhere else too and even copied their mistake, of calling it a matchlock and not correcting it to be a wheelie ... haha! I guess in the future I should use the computer with LARGE screen and not that of my tiny phone screen, LOL ... and maybe even slow down whilst posting ...
