Laguiole Knives in history

Always on the lookout for reproduction items that existed in various periods of history, I came across these knives. I've heard that they were popular during the French fur trade period. Can anyone expound on this?

I cannot say how much they did or did not play a part on this continent during that time period. I think a lot of knives of that period were very utilitarian and hand made. From what I know of them the knives have never changed in craftsmanship and quality. Unless you were someone who had money I would think they might not be so common. This is just speculation by my part. They do make some beautiful artesian crafted knives that I think anyone of us would be proud to own. It will be interesting to see what others post as this is an interesting topic.
