I recently received a .32 CVA Squirrel rifle from a member on here. Seems the main difference is the stock shape. This one was shooting right on with 10 grains 3f Swiss. Fun to shoot.

I just picked one up from the Gun Works yesterday. They have both the finished rifles and kits in stock. I would have liked the kit but wanted to shoot one now. I may go back and get the kit later. I'll have it rebored into a 40.

I have the CVA Squirrel rifle but loved the longer barrel on the Crockett. This is one of the best made production guns I've seen.

As many of you know, I've been reading Baird's 1st Hawken book. While Hanson mentioned the other guns the Brothers made for the local trade, Baird goes into it in a little more detail. The Crockett looks like something they would have made to fill that niche. However, it reminds me of a Vincent rifle.

With Crockett dying at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, I doubt if the "Betsy" this is supposedly patterned after, was a Percussion gun.

Thanks!

Walt

I just ordered a Traditions Crockett rifle from my favorite place, The Gun WorksšŸ‘ A great place to deal with and super fast service. Will post photos when it arrives. Just had to share my experience with a new toyšŸ‘
This is a fun gun to shoot, you will be very happy with your latest acquisition.

Mine was a bit of a rattle trap but when all the screws were adjusted properly it was amazingly accurate. I sold it to a fellow club member who tweaked a few things and he seems happy with it. I later found the Manila hanging tag I'd taped a target I'd shot to with the load recorded, I do this with most guns I've sighted, and gave it to the new owner. It was 5 shots at 25 yards one could cover with a nickel. I can't remember the load but I'm thinking it was a .315 ball, .018 patch (red stripe ticking) spit lubed and around 30 grains 3FG. This was not a one time best grouping but one that was repeatable, mostly.

I'd be interested in what your results are.

FWIW, hammers, maybe other things are often a tad "wiggly" on Crocketts and some other Traditions rifles. This was not remotely and issue with me since everything worked correctly, accuracy was astonishing and it was a delight to handle. The Crockett is not a custom rifle; it's a high quality, accurate import with occasional expected flaws found in most factory imports.

Shot mine today at the club. Only had two shooters show up so did not have a match and my off-hand shooting showed the lack of competition. I was easily able to call my shots though and they went where I sent them. Was shooting 20 grains of 3f under a .310 Hornady ball wrapped in .010 prelubed patches set off with a CCI #11. Man what fun, no recoil at all. Was able to thumb seat this combo although previous testing has shown a .315 ball and .010 or .015 patch might be a little more accurate. I have several boxes of the .310 balls and only one of the .315 and their accuracy really is wasted on off-hand 25 yard shooting. I am definitely going to spend more time shooting the Crockett. I have a wee 4ā€ plate that should make a swell reactive target, maybe next weekend.
