I'm a new member and hope this is the appropriate place to post this question. I have a .50 cal Renegade flintlock and normally shoot 275 grain maxi balls with 80 grains of powder. I found a box of 350 grain maxi balls I didn't know I had, what amount of powder should I use with these heavier bullets? I hunt whitetail deer in Pennsylvania. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Powder is the same or more ,the most important is use a felt wad over powder to protect base oand (MOST) important for accuracy is lube bottom groove (ONLY) ! Melt what ever manure they have for lube and replace with a good lube,NASA modified comes to mind/and if that's a problem PM me I can help./Ed

I used to shoot 370 grain maxi balls from my renegade. I used 80 grains of 2fg powder. Grouped well out to 100 yards.

I've standardized my .50 cals at 90gr 3F with a 370(?) gr maxi. The .54's get 110gr with a 430 gr maxi. For whatever reason those loads work extremely well in all my rifles. Keeps things simple too. I'd start with your 80gr load and try +5gr increments and see what your rifle likes. From my experience I doubt you'll need to go higher than 95gr. I have not used over powder wads but after reading here I think I'll be giving them a try.

Might be, you will find this useful . . . .

It’s from the TC manual of 1992.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I thought the heavier bullet would require more powder, but I will start at the 80 grains and go from there.

Loads are often lighter to avoid higher pressures from starting the heavier bullet. A heavier bullet doesn't need a magnum velocity to work.

Use 100gr of ffg in my traditions .50 with a 360 gr minie. Super accurate but it kills on both ends..... 80 shoots almost as good and I can shoot it all day comfortably. Gun only weighs like 5.5 pounds though.

Heavier bullets require less powder. I agree with another poster, why not use round ball?

Yep. Unless a fella just likes to get the Bejesus kicked out of him. 60 grains of FFFG and a PRB kill deer just fine, usually with complete pass-thrus. Don't know how much more "Power" a guy needs. T/C's published velocities, with PRB's or bullets, are to put it mildly, really, really generous. Chronographs don't lie, but marketing departments might stretch the truth. Maybe a whole lot.
