Simple question. Have any of you with the capabilities ever attempted to replace the integral percusson nipples in an original A & T pepperbox? Is there enough “meat” at the breech end to d&t for an appropriate nipple?
i think archaeologist son has my Flaydermann, so I can’t look model up. ( suppose I could get the google fu going), this is the little .32 calibre gun with approx. 3" bbls. OAL = approx. 7".
I have all the equipment, facilities, and know-how. Just want to confer with someone else who as attempted this before I start drilling holes and pounding away on it. 😁😁😁.
PM’s are welcome if you do not feel cozy discussing on open forum. 😉

I pulled one out to look. As you know, the nipples are part of the assembly and do not screw out. I doubt that there is enough "meat" to catch the threads of a replacement nipple ( after drilling and tapping the old nipple areas)

.I'm not a machinist, so a talented person MIGHT be able to pull it off (but why?).

This is exactly what I thought. ( Same model btw). Thanks for reply.

( Not my gun, I was asked by the owner if he thought it possible. I was very skeptical even then).

I plan to try it on my 1837 Patent version once I decide which replacement cones to use (i.e. lowest overall profile, and threads for which I can find a corresponding tap)... my gunsmith and I discussed this a year ago, and I just have not followed through yet on finding the appropriate cones

I was thinking of something along the lines of a 12 x 28 pistol nipple. T/C usedto make something low profile for their Patriot. And there were some similar ampco nipples. They may require additional modification and such. But I just don’t know what the inside will look like once I drill in and see what we have to work with. My biggest concern was a stated above, not enough metal for adequate threads.
