For the past year I have been shooting my Pedersoli Harper's Ferry flint pistol .58cal. I built it from a kit and I absolutely love its looks and balance. It is rifled but only has the brass blade front sight. I am constantly shooting high, trying to hit pop cans at 15ft is an exercise in frustration. Short of adding a non historically correct rear sight can you offer any advice on front sight only pistol shooting? My elevation control is all over the place.

Chris

Looking at the front sight only maybe your problem, seeing the same amount of barrel acts as the rear sight. If you see the front sight and nothing but the breech then next time you see the front sight and a bit of barrel then that second shot will hit higher.

I have to disagree with @Phil Coffins since you want the point of impact to be lower. Seeing more of the barrel is the same as raising the rear sight.. Adding a rear sight will only raise the point of impact unless you add a tall front sight. Try lining the front sight with the slot in the tang screw and dropping the front until you can just see the tip of the front sight

Most of these were shot by instinct, or just pointing. Hence no rear sight, or no front sight either.

Grenadier, I meant to keep a constant sight picture. I should of added that you could get a group then use Kentucky windage to place the shot. And you’re right but it seems he doesn’t want to alter the gun.

The Brass Blade is already pretty Tall. I keep thinking of maybe fabricating something that will screw down with the barrel tang screw, easily removable that way.

Exactly.

Yeah, these were point and shoot weapons where any hit in the torso was sufficient. Either learn what sight hold you need without a rear sight or put one on there. Something that would attach to the tang screw is a good option.

If you want a simple rear sight, think about filing a shallow groove across the tang at the breach end of the barrel. Get a piece of steel, shape a rear sight and solder it into the shallow groove. Easy. :thumb::cool:

I mounted a rear sight on mine with some 2 sided tape that I can remove easily, without damaging the gun. Just need to be careful when moving about so not to bump it.
