Nope. He never said he’d make the shot. Just that he’d like to try.
I had no problems understanding what he said and meant (it has a regular factory stock, factory barrel, factory lock, and factory trigger).
Adding a peep sight doesn't change the rifle's capability. If a rifle was only capable of 2 MOA out of the box, adding a peep will not make it a 1 MOA rifle.

I never mentioned 1200 yards, you did and I have no idea where in your imagination you plucked it from.
I never said I have hit a gong similar to the one used in Idaholewis's off hand.
Again I know not what part of your imagination is running away with your rational behaviour!
However, I have in the past made good shots off hand at long distances and it was fun and yes I guess very wasteful.
It's just that I have never done it with a muzzleloader.
While I am wasting my time answering you I will go on to say that I would not give a flying fig if after 10 shots I never hit the gong but if I got close to it off hand I would call it good.

You could order custom TC Encores and Contenders there which is why they called it a custom shop. The off the shelf muzzleloaders were just that, run of the mill production guns. Every mass manufacturing process occasionally produces a flawed ltem, and sometimes they slip through quality control. In the end YOU are the final quality control. YOU did not carefully inspect what you bought, and consequently screwed up and purchased a lemon. Instead of accepting the fact that you didn’t take care in examining your purchase, or admitting that at the time you did not have the knowledge to determine if what you were buying was faulty or not, you choose to disparage the manufacturer of what most agree is a truly excellent product. It’s time to put on your big boy pants and quit crying.
Kind of reminds me when two scientists reported (about 30 years ago) they had figured out cold fusion. Poor guys had to go into hiding fearing for their lives. I don't recall if they both lived through the attacks from all the scientists who knew it couldn't be done. (kind of think the attackers had a vested interest in preventing the planet getting cold fusion)
But then, stuff like this isn't new - take a look at Galileo for instance as just one example. This is the kind of s**t you run into on planet earth when you're different.

Nice shootin' Lew. I always like your videos showing what the stock 1:48 barrel is capable of in comparison to the fast twist Rice and GM barrels you put on some of them. I'm very much more of a PRB under a 100 yards type of guy with muzzleloaders but as a life long shooter I can certainly appreciate the research, effort, attention to detail, experimenting, note taking, learning from failure, calculating, and steady hand that goes into shooting the distances and groups you do...and then being willing to fully share it with anybody and everybody that asks.
It's no secret what sights Idaholewis puts on them, he readily shares it, has instructional videos about it, and has stated countless times that changing the sights is one of the first things he does. He has also stated countless times that he couldn't shoot the groups and distances he does if it weren't for the sights (in part) he uses. They are clearly shown in his pics and videos with no effort to hide them. Not a difficult thing to figure out. Jealousy sure can interfere with rational thinking. Apparently some folks can't stand the fact that others are good shots too or...gasp...maybe even better shots.
And hey @Britsmoothy , I'll trade off trying to hit that 500 yard gong offhand with you. Sounds like fun. Fair warning, if I manage to hit it even once in 50 tries you'll never shut me up about it.

I've owned just two TC Hawken rifles, a .45 and a .50. I liked them well-enough; never was a really good marksman and by the time that I retired and could devote the time and energy to become a decent shot, a permanent neurological disease ended my shooting.

From a bench I have hit a 200 yard gong, several times with a patched round ball. It was fun to watch my son's telescopic video as one could see the air change as it dropped to under supersonic. I also tried at 300 yards, and while I scared the gong by being very close...., I didn't hit the gong (Unless kicking up gravel that then hit the gong would be counted as a "hit"... No?... ) I was still surprised that the impacts were so close.

I forget what it stands for, but it's boring out the last half inch of the muzzle. Essentially, removing the lands when it's done right. Evidently TC didn't always get the QLA concentric with the bore which resulted in gasses exiting one side of the projectile before the other, thus 'steering' it off course.

QLA Stands for “Quick Load Accurizor” In short (In My opinion, From testing) it was a BAD idea, I have had 2 TC Barrels with QLA and Both were a Nightmare, I couldn’t get rid of them fast enough. I wouldn’t have another one unless I could get it for Scrap metal Price.
