How do you folks use these? Looks like if you put the the tip in the bottom of the pan depress the flask wait a couple of seconds and then remove it you should be done and ready to go am I right? It says it meters like 3g of powder and that sounds about right. The instuctions also say to use 4F but it looks like it has a big enough hole to meter 3F as well.

That's about it...I like them for the precision and consistency...I use Goex 4F in mine, fills the pan on a TC lock half full with 3grns 4F every time. (the problenm with the larger 3F kernels in mine is that they bridge/clog the crossways entry hole up inside the resevoir, not in the tube itself)

Something I've noticed when shooting in high humidity where the pan gets a little messy if you don't wipe it out after every shot, the plunger will gradually 'pick up' residue from the pan and eventually clog.

To prevent that at the range I've gotten into the habit of keeping half a pipe cleaner slid up into the plunger tube between shots, seems to absorb residue that gets into the tube.

Are they adjustable for grains?I just ordered one from TOW.

(Don't know if you're asking me or Pitts...but mine are not adjustable...simply have fixed 3grn spring loaded plunger/dispensers like Pitts described)

Roundball Is it gonna make a difference if I use 3f instead of 4f?Does the hammer have to be at half cock to prime?Im sure its not full cock right?

I have one and it doesn't dispence 3f very well. Works good with 4f. The only way to adjust it would be to shorten the brass tip for less prime.

The problem with the larger 3F kernels in mine is that the larger kernels bridge/clog the crossways entry hole up inside the resevoir at the TOP of the tube, not down in the tube itself.

The Possible Shop at the top of the forum has two different size brass pan primers, and somebody posted months ago that the larger one handles 3F OK...you might check with the Possible Shop.

The slim brass pen-shaped pan primers allow priming at half cock...the fatter priming horn I have requires full cock to avoid letting the flint scar the side of the horn...but it really doesn't matter to be at full cock as the frizzen is flipped open while your priming anyway

Roundball the hole in the top of mine looks big enough to pass 3F and I was thinking if I only filled it 3/4 I should be able to give it a quick shake like any powder horn a nd the powder should flow out ok. I also thought being brass if it doesn't work good I could make the hole a bit bigger. Or just buy some 4F

Anyway I bought that and some real flint today as I was passing by Kittery Trading Post and like going by Riley's gun shop there is a law saying you must stop in as you pass the place

I still can't figure out the flint I bought though it says English black flint "made in the USA" :shocked2:

You can order two different size dispenser valves (or whatever you call them) from TOTW, 1 grain and 3 grain. I know those are mostly for folks who make their own, but the two fit different sized holes, so I doubt they're interchangeable.

You can always push it twice to despense 6 grains. Which is what I do at the range currently. Or hold it down at an angle and pull it along the pan to despense whatever charge you like.
I used to have one on a priming horn that I had filed the spring loaded valve tip on an angle. That way it just poured 4F into the pan as long as I held it down. Handy if you are using it to prime everything from small lock rifles to military muskets.
But to be honest, as soon as my current can of 4F powder is empty, I'll probably start priming out of my main powder horn again and forego the priming tip.

Empty it first...

I know, brass doesn't spark, but it will heat up when filed upon, why take chances...
