I have a brown bess that I have only used in reenacting and hav :hmm: e been thinking about shooting buck and ball at the range. I also would like to shoot shot in it. How was this done back in the day. Mudd Turtle.

Yup.....I've made buck'n'ball cartridges exactly like that photo. They make an interesting pattern at 25 yards out of a shortened .69 Charleville musket. I usually found that the large ball hits the aiming point and the three smaller shot make a nice triangle about a foot or so around it. I've also loaded them loose, using normal overpowder cards. Fun to play with, but I'd hate to be on the receiving and.
