Nautical Engraved, silver mounted horn

Art and Jan posted this horn on the Makers Blog quite a while back, but I was asked to post a couple of pictures again here.

The raw horn had a thick tip allowing for a heavily carved throat. The horn is mounted fore and aft with sterling silver bands and strap swivels. The stopper is turned from ebony and the horn tip has a brass liner that prevents splitting. The base plug is turned walnut and is fitted with a threaded, wooden cascabel for easy filling. The engraved nautical chart is of the Chesapeake Bay area around Annapolis and is taken (including the antiquated spelling) from a map made of the area in November of 1769.

So, Dave, this is where you are hiding the goodies! You have always had a steadier hand than I. Sometimes envious.
When MUCH younger, sailed out of the Severn many times, learned boat handling on the Chesapeake. Those short-fetch waves can sure take you by surprise!
Never thought to use some of my fine silver on horns and stuff, got a good pile of it. Sometimes I'll put someone's initial on a knife handle or something. And I do have a .50 cal Deringer I plan to use some on.
And still plan on you doing some engraving on the Jaeger lock. just been busy with the VA, trying to keep mobile. Take care, my friend!

Craig....I loved sailing the Chesapeake as well..... I've posted several other horns with silver mounts here and on the ALR site. I like using silver and it works easily. And any time on the lock engraving. Would be happy to do it for you.
