As was said before, it will work fine in your gun!!!!!

Now lets look at the guns that should not be used with pyrodex.

Any gun with a split in the barrel.
Any gun that has Damascus barrels with a bulge.
Any gun that the threads for the nipple are so loose that the nipple will blow out.
Any gun that has been shoved into the mudd two feet and has a tripple charge of powder and 7 bullets in it.
What we are saying is any gun in good working order is safe to use pyrodex.
Now if you are still worried take the gun back get your money back and never pick up another muzzleloader. There is about 1000 years of experience on this board. Safty is important and we are telling you the truth. Start shooting and enjoy the gun or take it back. Ron
Damn, I always keep my rifle in mud with a triple charge. Although, I usually have 8 bullets in it so, maybe it will be ok 😂

Just remember to load by volume not by weight.
Pyrodex is not as dense as black powder. A pound of black powder takes up about a pint of space. A pound of pyrodex about a pint and a half cup.
A .45 will work great around 40- 70 grains of black powder. But a seventy grain charge of pyrodex weighs about 55 grains.. use a black powder measure and shoot the same volume, not the same weight.

This thread is 12.5 years old. Who are we talking to?

That's true, but most of the comments haven't changed in 12.5 years. So we are talking to someone new to muzzleloading and who is finding that real black powder is nearly impossible to find in a local gun store, but Pyrodex and Triple Se7en are.

So are you sure I can use it :hmm: ? I'm trusting you guys. The store clerk did say people had brought guns back, because the barrel had exploded from using Pyrodex.

How to you post pictures on this forum anyway?

Pyrodex is definitely safe in a caplock. It is a direct, though inferior, replacement for gunpowder(aka blackpowder). Just don't go crazy with your load. Any gun blown up by Pyrodex was overloaded. Remember, gunpowder and replacements, like pyrodex, are measured by volume, not weight.

I've used Pyrodex for over 20 years in rifles, revolvers and pistols. Only issue I ever had was with RS. Periodic hesitation ignition. Very periodic. I use P now in everything and no hesitations.

I shot this very old cardboard container of Pyrodex last week. In my CVA Hawken percussion rifle. It works just fine.
The warning on BP guns is to not use smokeless powder. Very bad things will happen.

Holy thread resurrection. I just saw the thread was posted in 2008.

There's a farm and home store near my house and I noticed tonight they jacked the price of 777 and Pyrodex up to $40/lb.
They had plenty of it though.

Yeah, it wouldn't be good to shoot smokeless powder. BOOM!

Don’t pay those prices or they’ll just keep jacking them!

it is still a great post for a new bee, and will help out a lot of first timers.
