I also agree that every one is initialed to there opinion, so please don't take my reply to heart. it is just my opinion. if it works for you, then by all means use it.
 
If you look at many original rifles you will find the wood just in front of the drum is "burned" away. Flash cups are meant to prevent damage more than directing flash and cap fragments away from the shooter. To do this they should be place with the high shoulder facing forward. With the correct capper loading is no problem.
 
A toothbrush does wonders. If you remove the nipple when you clean just soak both together. I use a tea ball in hot water.

burnt wood is character, it comes with age. what is the worry?
 
it seams like in days of OLD that the old timer's had other pressing things to worry about than burnt wood. maybe keeping there top not on??
