New to this area, was wanting to get some black powder. Looking on the web, at local stores, all I've found is Blackhirn muzzleloading propellant powder. Is this true BP or a moder version? I've always used Goex BP. What's the difference?

Blackhorn 209 powder is a synthetic black powder that is made for use in a modern in-line rifle. The 209 refers to the type of primer that is needed to get reliable ignition.

Basically, that makes it unsuitable for the traditional side lock type of guns which use a small percussion cap for ignition.

There are several other synthetic powders on the market that will work rather well in the traditional style guns. The oldest is Pyrodex and another one is called Triple Se7en .

While these powders do work, nothing beats real black powder for speed of ignition and reliability in muzzleloaders.

While most gun stores don't carry real black powder, some of them do but you will need to ask the store owner or manager if they have it.
That's because, by Federal law, they must keep it locked up in a powder vault. Because it is locked up, often the guy at the counter won't even know they have real black powder. That's why I suggested talking to the manager or owner.

Real black powder can be bought on line and shipped to your door from several different places.

Everybody has their preference. Some go with local availability. I've used Pyrodex "P", 3f equivalent, for many years. Availability and in some instances cost. A good load can be found with any of them.

I'm located North of Peyton Colorado. Don't know any of the smaller mom and pop type stores in the area. I do try to stay away from the big (bass pro) types.

I live in RI. My main shop carries “real” black powder. It has to be stored in a steel lock box, he’s limited to approximately 12, one pound cans and only certain employees, who have been BCI checked and approved can sell it! Also ever can is logged in when it arrives and has to be signed out in a log book. Talk about stricken federal regulations

Give a call to: The Mountain Man in Colorado Springs. They may stock bp. Also, consider joining a local club. A very good club in the Springs is the Colorado Springs muzzle loaders: csml pretty sure they will have a group buy program and they are a good bunch to hang out with.
